Background: Opinions on the influence of acid etching on the dental pulp are divided. The purpose of the study was to compare the response of the dental pulp to cavity preparation when acid etching ... was used and when etching was omitted. Materials and methods: Class V cavities on the mesial surface of the first upper molar in 28 Wistar rats were prepared for restoration. In each animal, the cavity in the right molar was etched with acid, rinsed with saline, gently dried with air and restored with Cavit. The cavity in the contralateral, left tooth was only rinsed with saline, dried with air and restored with Cavit. The left and right second molars served as control. The animals were sacrificed 5 min, 6 h, 24 h and 72 h postoperatively. Histological and ultrathin sections of the treated teeth were examined by light and electron microscopy. Qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis was performed. Results: Comparison of sections from the etched and unetched teeth showed that 5 minutes postoperatively, the odontoblastic layer was more disorganized beneath the etched cavities; 6 and 24 hours postoperatively, fewer odontoblasts were visible and hyperaemia of the pulp was more extensive beneath the etched cavities; 72 hours postoperatively, there was less evidenceof repair beneath the etched cavities, but the inflammatory reaction in the pulp was equally pronounced in both sets of teeth. Ultrastructural analysis revealed apoptosis to be a possible form of cell death after both procedures. Conclusion: Acid etching of the cavity causes additional injury toodontoblasts. Inflammation in the dental pulp appears simultaneously with dentinogenesis. The study should be complemented by analysis of bacteria present in cavities.
