    The purpose of this article is to present eating disorders in women as a multiplex phenomenon in society from the sociological, medical and psychosocial aspects. It discusses the influence of ... contemporary society and mass media on eating patterns, staling that nutrition is a determining factor in shaping of personal identities. The article presents different kinds of eating disorders and their aetiology thoroughly explored. The models of the development of eating disorders are explained in the light of their origin: somatic/medical, psychoanalytic, those arising from family dynamics, and sociological. The latter provides an insight to the social causes for the development of eating disorders as experienced by women. It examines viable and workable medical and psychological approaches to treatment, with special emphasis on self-help. The chapter on rehabilitation suggests the modes and strategies leading to recovery and emphasises beneficial impact of learning about other successful outcomes.
