  • Serumska enolaza specifična za nevron pri zdravih donošenih novorojenčkih v zgodnjem neonatalnem obdobju = Serum neuron specific enolase in healthy term newborn infants in the early neonatal period
    Felc, Zlata ...
Background: In healthy adults, the serum concentration of neuron specific enolase (s-NSE), a y isoenzyme of a cytoplasmic glycolytic enzyme, is below 12.5 pg/L. The aim of the study was to determine ... the mean sNSE concentration in healthy term newborn infants in the first week of life. Population and Methods: During a prospective study, s-NSE was measured on day 3 or 4 in 38 healthy newborn infants (19 girls, 19 boys) undergoing routine blood sampling for metabolic screening. In a further 16 healthy infants, aged more than 7 days, s-NSE (19 determinations) was measured at the time of followup because of an enlarged gland on adrenal scanning (retrospective study). The concentration of s-NSE was measured by an immunoluminometric assay LIA-matr NSE Profiligenr, with haemolysed serum samples being excluded. Results: The mean s-NSE in the newborn group was clearly above the mean s-NSE in the infantgroup (26.7 micro g/L vs. 15.2 micro g/L; P<0.01); no significant difference in the mean s-NSE between girls and boys (27.4 micro g/ L vs. 26.0 micro g/L; P>0.05) was detected. Conclusions: These results indicate that the concentration of s-NSE in healthy term newborn infants in the first week of life could be higher than values in healthy infants and adults. Whether higherlevels of s-NSE in healthy term newborn infants reflect a high activity of neuron specific enolase during foetal development remains unknown.
