    Commotio cordis (cardiac concussion) refers to blunt, nonpenetrating, precordial, usually innocent-appearing chest blow that causes arrhythmias or sudden death without evidence of heart injury at ... autopsy. Ventricular fibrillation is the substrate most commonly responsible for chest blow-inducedsudden death. Commotio cordis occurs in the setting of sporting events as well as in a variety of daily living circumstances in people who seem to have entirely healthy hearts. Absence of morphologic cardiac injury distinguishes commotio from contusio cordis. Prompt cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation is a major determinant of surviving a commotio cordis event, although the survival rate is low (10%). The article deals with definition, pathophysiology, evidence, incidence, event settings, clinical profile, therapeutic and preventive measures of commotio cordis. The most important message of the article is, that any chest blow (modest, innocent, unintentional) can be life-threatening.
