  • Miastenija gravis in nosečnost = Myasthenia gravis and pregnancy
Šega, Saša, dr. med., nevrologinja, 1962- ; Horvat, Alenka, 1967-
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease in which autoantibodies to acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction cause impaired neuromuscular transmission. MG, like other autoimmune ... diseases, occurs commonly in women during the childbearing period. The onset of MG can be triggered during pregnancy or post partum. In pre-existing MG, exacerbations can occur during pregnancy, labor or the postpartum period. Exacerbations are unpredictable and do not necessarily correlate with the previous course of thedisease. Decisions about treatment during pregnancy must be based on balancing of potential complications for the fetus and exacerbations in the mother. Women with MG have an increased rate of delivery complications and a higher rate of interventions during delivery. Newborns of myasthenic mothers may be affected post partum because of placental transfer of antibodies by transient neonatal MG or in utero by arthrogryposis.
