    Prejudice about people with severe mental illness is a major obstacle to high-quality mental health care. The reasons for stigmatization are lack of information, outdated information about the causes ... and prognosis of mental diseases, fear and resentment of different people, media disinformation, adverse effects of psychotropic medication, the terminology of severe mental illness. The consequences of stigmatization include lower self-image and poorer functioning of people with severe mental illness, lower quality of treatment, insufficient cooperation or lack of cooperation between practitioners, unprofessional alternative types of treatment, smaller employment and education opportunities and lack of relevant national legislation. Stigmatization has been proved to be reduced by education about mental disorders and direct contact with people with severe mental illness.
