    Background: When force is applied to the tooth many chemical messengers are released which interfere with the remodelling of alveolar bone and periodontalligament. Endothelin is present in ... periodontal ligament and bone inphysiological conditions. Its role in orthodontic tooth movement has not been explained. Material and methods: The study was performed on 21 male Wistar rats, which were divided into three groups. In the first two groups of animals, a closed coil spring was applied between the upper left first molar and upper incisors. Group 1 was additionally treated with daily subcutaneous administration of tezosentan. Group 3 received no treatment and served as the control group. Tooth movement was measured with a digital caliper on days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 25. Results: The distance between the left upper molar icisors decreased in all animals of groups 1 and 2. On day 25, tooth movement in groupated with tezosentan was significantly greater than in group 2 which did not receive tezosentan (1.65 0.46 mm and 1.04 0.38 mm respectively, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The endothelin system may play a role in biological controlof tooth movement. Our results suggest that endothelin suppresses toothmovement in rats.
