  • Metode racionalnega antibiotičnega zdravljenja = Methods of rational use of antibiotics

    Antibiotic overuse and misuse have been recognized as a global problem. The spreading of resistant bacterial strains has been observed worldwide. Excessive use of antibiotics contributes to ... unnecessary health-care costs. Theuse of antibiotics in hospitals may be regulated by using lists of antibiotics that have to be approved by the authorities, most often by an infectious diseases consultant. Antibiotic cycling is another method of regulated use of antibiotics, in which an antibiotic regimen is chosen for a specified time interval, later switching to another regimen for another specified time interval. Antibiotic mixing seems to be more effective for control of antibiotic resistance than cycling. In some hospitals, antibiotics guidellnes are implemented through computer assisted decision support systems.Studies on the effects of the above-mentioned methods of antibiotic restrictions have shown a favourable influence of such restrictions on treatment costs and in most cases also on antimicrobial resistance. In spite of favourable study results, the problem of antibiotic overuse and bacterial resistance seems to remain unsolved. Intensified efforts of infectious diseasespecialists, clinical microbiologists and the general public will be needed in the future.
