  • Starostnik in motnje vida = Visual impairment of the elderly
    Jaki Mekjavić, Polona
Age-related impairments of visual function are becoming more frequent. Elderlywith poor sight have difficulty in conducting their daily activities, thus becoming less independent, and at greater risk ... for falls and consequent fractures. As a result, their quality of life is compromised leading to frequent bouts of depression. The normal changes in visual function that occurwith ageing are presbyopia, changes in tear film, and reduced contrast sensitivity. Although these are physiological changes, they can have a significant impact on sight and thus the daily activities of the elderly. The most frequent eye illnesses which appear with ageing are age-related macular degeneration of the fovea, open angle glaucoma cataract and diabetic retinopathy. Most of these illnesses may be cured, or their progression attenuated, with early diagnosis and treatement. If these illnesses are not managed properly, they can result in blindness.
