  • Povezava med vrsto koreninske ploskve in debelino cementa pri stalnih kočnikih = Relationship between the type of root surface and cementum thickness in permanent molars
    Štamfelj, Iztok ...
Background: Cementum thickness affects the biomechanical properties of a toothand is relevant for clinical practice. The literature data on cementum thickness are limited to singl` rooted teeth and ... maxillary premolars. Differences in cementum thickness among root surfaces also have not been investigated in detail. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate cementum thickness on all root surfaces of permanent molars. Material and methods: Cementum thickness was measured with an optical microscope on transversely sectioned roots of 33 extracted two-rooted mandibular and 33 three-rooted maxillary permanent molars. The roots were sectioned at a level midway between furcation and root apices. Cementum thickness was measured at the midpoint of each of the four root surfaces and at the site of maximal thickness. Results: Midpoint cementum thickness varied between 5 and 700 microm in mandibular molars, and between 5 and 800 micro m in maxillary molars. Maximal cementum thickness varied between 20 and 700 micro m in mandibular molars, and between 25 and 1140 micro m in maxillary molars. The midpoint of interradicular surfaces exhibited the thickest cementum, followed by the opposing non-interradicular and finally the remaining non-interradicular root surfaces (p < 0.001). The sites exhibiting maximum cementum thickness were also located most frequently on interradicular surfaces. Conclusion: In this study, the greatest cementum thickness was foundon interradicular surfaces, and not on distal root surfaces as would be expected considering mesial drift. The nonuniform thickness of cementum on theroots of molars could not be entirely attributed to tooth migration.
