Vidović Valentinčič, Nataša ; Kraut, Aleksandra
Background: Intermediate uveitis (IU) is an intraocular inflammation affectinganterior vitreous, peripheral retina and pars plana of the ciliary body. Etiology is mostly unknown, but IU can be ... associated with systemic diseases including multiple sclerosis, sarcoidosis and occasionally with systemic infectious diseases. Symptoms include blurred vision and floaters. Signs are vitritis with typical infiltrates called snowballs and snowbanking, retinal vasculitis and cystoid macular edema. The most frequent complication of intermediate uveitis is cataract, the most frequent cause of low visual acuity is cystoid macular edema. Treatment consists of local and systemic corticosteroids, various, other immunosupresants, laser coagulation and vitrectomy. Conclusions: Prognosis of visual acuity is satisfactory and majority of patients have visual acuity of at least 0.5. Long-term remissions of the disease occur in one third of adult patients and in approximately half of children with IU.
