  • Modernism and multiethnicity? : interwar Czech literature from Prague and Slovenian literature from Trieste

    This paper discusses the connection between Modernism and multiethnicity. The first part defines the historical features of multi-ethnicity in Prague and Trieste under the Habsburgs and shows how ... crucial the ethnic discourse was for the making of the modern metropolis in Western as well as in East-Central Europe. Through the analysis of two novels, Marie Majerovás Přehrada (The dam) and Bogomir Magajna's Graničarji (The border-guards), the author considers the question whether the multiethnic issue can be regarded as an element of modernist imagery of Prague and Trieste.
