Bregant, Lev ; Novak-Antolič, Živa ; Verdenik, Ivan
Background. Preterm delivery is still the main cause of morbidity and mortality in neonates. Pharmacologic tocolysis is a possible measure in prevention of preterm labor. A betamimetic agent ... ritodrine hydrochloride is the most commonly used tocolytic agent. The purpose of tocolysis is to gain time when fetal lung maturation can be promoted by various pharmacologic agents. Methods. A retrospective study involving 6027 births taking place in the Ljubljana maternity in 1993 was carried out by Perinatal Information System of Slovenia. Results. Pharmacologic tocolysis was used in 102 pregnant women, who gave birth to 128 prematures. Seven prematures suffered from intracranial hemorrhage, 5 of them were from multiple pregnancies. Conclusions. Efforts in improving perinatal results have to be focused on the prevention of prematury. Beside the tocolytic action of betamimetic ritodrine hydrochloride the possibility of intracranial hemorrhage has to be born in mind, especially in triplets and quadruplets. Fetal lung maturity should be promoted by corticosteoids.
