    Background. This review article brings knowledge about infection with human parvovirus B 19 during pregnancy. Risk for the fetus and possible outcomes of pregnancies are presented. Common forms of ... affection of the fetus are discussed with special regards to nonimmune hydrops fetalis and its' pathogenesis. Methods for making diagnosis of infection with human parvovirus B 19 and for recognition of fetal involvement are described. The mode of treatment and doubts about it are discussed. Conclussions. Maternal infection with human parvovirus B 19 may lead to infection and even death of the fetus. The optimal mode of treatment is not yet defined and additional studies of the risks and benefits of intrauterine therapy are necessary before definitive recommendations can be made.
