    Transport in utero (TIU) is the transfer of pregnant woman in need of special obstetrical treatmentand/or of the newborn who will be in need of special treatment and/or care from the local maternity ... hospital into an adequate. Centre of perinatal care. TIU in Slovenia is organized since the year 1985. With the opening of the new maternity hospital in Ljubljana, the number of TIUincreased from 66 in the year 1978 to 188 in 1990, oscillating in the last years between 150 and 180 yearly. After the year 1990 rom 1,0 to 1,3% of all the pregnant women in Slovenia were transferred to Ljubljana. Since 1990, TIU accounts for 2,5 to 3% of all deliveries. Most frequent indications for TIU were: premature rupture of fetal membranes (44%), iminnt premature delivery (27%), placental anomalies (9%), fetal anomalies (6%), diseases of mother (5%), intrauterine cessation of fetal growth (3%) and hypertension in pregnancy (3%). 45% of children were born between 28 and 33 week of gestation.70% of children born after TIU needed intensive therapy and/or care.In spite of the fact, that these children were more ill and needed a moreintensive treatment than other newborns, their rate of survival was between 75 and 95%.
