  • Intermittent itraconazole in the treatment of distolateral onychomycosis
    Prelog, Ida ; Dolenc-Voljč, Mateja, 1962-
Background. Itraconazole is a broad-spectrum triazole with known efficacy in pulse therapy for various dermatomycoses. Objectives. To perform an anlysis ofthe efficacy of pulse therapy with ... itraconazole in treating distolateral toeanil and fingernail onychomycosis and to evaluate the safety of intermittent treatment with itraconazole. Patients and methods. The study was completed by 17 patients. Treatment consisted of two pulses of itraconazole, 200 mg twice daily, for seven consecutive days each month for fingernail onychomycosis and of three pulses for toenail onychomycosis. Clinical evaluation was made before treatment, at each month during treatment period and at week 24, 36 and 48 post-treatment. Mycological examinations were performed at the beginning and the end of therapy as well as at each post-treatment visit. Results. Progressive improvement of all clinical signs of onychomycosis was noted at each point of patient evaluations. Mycological cure results were statistically significant comparing pre-treatment status with the final visit at week 48. In two patients with toenail onychomycosis onthe last visit relapse was considered. Conclusions. Very satisfactory clinical and mycological responses were observed in our patients. Itraconazoletherapy was also associated with good tolerability and patient compliance.
