  • Utrujenost pri osebah, ki so prebolele otroško paralizo = Fatigue of polio survivors
Puzić Ravnjak, Nataša ; Burger, Helena
Introduction: There are several hundred polio survivors in Slovenia and many of them complain about new problems known as post-polio syndrome (PPS). One of those is fatigue, which may affect up to ... 90% of subjects with PPS. Fatigue affects the ability to work and to perform the activities of daily living. In Slovenia, approximately 69% of polio survivors have symptoms of PPS, but up to now there no study has been conducted on how severe a problem fatigue actually is. Aim: The aim of the study was to find out how severe a problem is fatigue for polio survivors in Slovenia. Patients and methods: A questionnaire about main demografic and clinical questions, Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and Visual Analogue Scale for fatigue (VAS) were sent to all (n = 196) polio survivors who are visiting Institute for Rehabilitation in Ljubljana. Descriptive statistics and correlations were calculated. Results: We received 143 questionnaires, of which 136 (69.4%) were validly filled in. 88 of respondents were women and 48 men; mean age was 61.4 years (SD 11.1); respondents were aged 3.9 years on average (SD 5.2) at acute poliomyelitis. 8.8% of them did not have new symptoms, 8.8% had one new symptom, 22.8% two, 22.1% three and 37.5% had four new symptoms. 85.3% of polio survivors stated fatigue as a problem. The more new symptoms subjects had, the more severe was their experience of fatigue (Pearson's correlation between number of new symptoms and FSS is r=0.545, p<0.0001; with VAS it is r=0.448, p<0.0001). Discussion: Our results are comparable with those from other studies done in western countries, thus suggesting the need of developing specific rehabilitation programs for polio survivors in Slovenia. Validation of the applied scales should be performed. Conclusions: Fatigue is a severe problem affecting the majority of Slovene polio survivors, which requires appropriate assessment and treatment.
