    Eržen, Ivan ; Uršič, Simona, 1962- ; Zaletel-Kragelj, Lijana
The present study was conducted to determine Cd blood levels among young males in Slovenia, who are occupationally not exposed to Cd and to find out what kind of relation if any is between Cd in ... blood and smoking habits. Samples from 381 non-smokers and 324 smoker, aged between 18 and 27 years (mean: 20.55+-1.89), were included in the analysis. The mean blood Cd level in the group of non smokers was 0,77 (range: 0,15-24) [micro]g/L, in the group of light smokers (more than 21 cigarettes per day) 1,76 (range: 0,15-14) [micro] g/L . The differences in blood levels of Cd were statistically significant with regard to the smoking habit (p.<0.0005). Results of the studygive a good assessment of Cd burdening of young Slovene male population. The information obtained provides a foundation for assessment of the importance of smoking habits as source of exposure to this nephrotoxic elemnt.
