Krakovski gozd near Kostanjevica is a 7000 ha forest area, representing the westernmost end of once enormous surfaces of oak forests in Slovenia, in the Sava and the Danube river basin. Its central ... part comprises a 40.5 ha space with preserved virgin forest characteristics which was proclaimed a reserve in 1952. It lies at an altitude of about 150 m, making part of the riverine forests along the Krka and its tributaries. Prevailing among the arboreal species are gigantic centennial oak and hornbeam trees. The undergrowth is poorly developed. Vegetationally, the forest reserve belongs to the association Pseudostellario-Carpinetum or Pseudostellario-Quercetum. Ornithologically, Krakovski gozd has not been an object of thorough research. Published on it were merely some shorter articles. The present paper is based on 11 field surveys between 1974 and 1990. The quantitative composition of bird populations was studied on the basis of four transect counts in the virgin and three in the surrounding forest. Table 1 shows the presence of species according to the counts while some of the data were obtained from different sources (Accipiter gentillis, Aquila pomarina, Columba palumbus, Strix uralensis, Upupa epops, Turdus viscivorus, Corvus cornix, Corvus corax).Of the breeders and probable breeders, 44 species were recorded in the protected forest area and its immediate surroundings. Further 12 breeders were stated in the nearby marsh of Trstenik. Krakovski gozd provides breedinggrounds to such endangered species as Ciconia nigra, Pernis apivorus and Perdix perdix, to vulnerable species such as Accipiter gentilis (?), Buteo buteo, Columba oenas, Streptopelia turtur, Picus canus, Dryocopus martius, Dendrocopos martius, Dendrocopos medius, Dendrocopos minor, Lanius collurio, Locustella fluviatilis, Sylvia communis, Ficedula albicollis and Sitta europeae. Of the rare species, there were recorded Aquila pomarina, Strix uralensis and Locustella luscinioides. Due to its ornithological significance, Krakovski gozd, knowm also for its abundant populations of Dendrocopos medius and Ficedulla albicollis, figures in the List of Important Bird Areas in Europe.
