  • Model of communication in the design process
    Tavčar, Jože, 1966- ; Duhovnik, Jože, 1948-
ǂThe ǂdesign process is composed of individual work and problem-solving which is most often performed in teams [Duffy 1998]. Informal communication is very important in the design-development phase, ... since it is a source of creativity. Electronic communication is becoming indispensable, but it cannot always replace direct personal contacts, especially in the conceptual design phase. The paper presents a communication model [Tavčar 1999] which includes all forms of information exchange which are characteristic of the design process: creative dialogue, review and approval, informing of participants and searching for information. The model helps recognise the communication channels, and the most suitable technical means of communication is used with respect to the frequency and content. The results of this research were used in the optimisation of the spatial arrangement of a development team and when determining the functionality of an information system. The applicability of the presented method was also verified in practice, during the implementation of a PDM system and concurrent engineering methods in a toolmaking shop.
