Companies can accelerate processes, decrease product lead-time and improve product quality by using the advantages of information technology. The question is how to apply appropriate systems to ... different companies, especially to medium-size and small companies. Large companies need advanced PDM systems, which are expensive, and difficult to apply and maintain, and education of employees and integration into ERP systems is needed. On the other hand, small companies need only simple PDM systems with basic functionality. We have developed a Java-based PDM system which can support product structure and document management. The data model is based on natural classification and offers multilevel abstraction. Classical communication is possible among small teams of designers. The Java PDM system is helpful in archiving, and is easy to install, use and maintain. It is pre-configured and can be used through the Internet. Work can be done on the Internet with a standard Web browser. No special software is required. There are some disadvantages, such as a restriction on the possibilities of program adaptation. The simple Java PDM system can input and output files which can be accessed regarding the life-time phase of the development process, and the role of the user according to privileges. Files are transferred using FTP protocol. The PDM system saves project data on which the user was last working and offers to continue working at the place where it was interrupted. The system is constantly aware of the current project and the active building block. The core of the program is a hierarchical product structure. The user can move through it and set a number of visible levels. Each building block can have documents attached. The PDM system enables archive searching between building blocks and documents. Searching can be performed on the basis of different attributes defined in the data model of building blocks and documents. The architecture of the Java PDM system is based on a database which is connected with the server application through the ODBC driver. On the server side there is also a FTP server, which enables transfer of files in the file system. The server application can be connected through the Internet using a Web browser, which is the only software needed by the client.
