Background. Familial hypercholesterolemia is an inborn disease of lipid metabolism which is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. The frequency ofa heterozygous form is 1 in 500 persons. The ... characteristic of the disease is a great elevation of the plasma total chosterol and LDL cholesterol, which is present from birth and leads to accelerated atherosclerosis. Therefore these patients, if untreated, are at high risk of premature coronary heart disease. Although there are relatively simple diagnostic methods for the disease, which can in most cases be controlled with a diet and medications, the majority of patients still remain unidentified and inadequately treated. Conclusions. This article puts emphasis on the importance of an early identification and apropriate treatment of patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, since this is the only way to prevent or considerably delay the ominous complications of this disease.
