    Haramija, Dragica
This paper introduces the picture book Once upon... 1001 Stories as a useful tool for family reading. The book takes both children and adults through a reading maze, inviting them to create their own ... stories, which in terms of their motives draw on folk tales from world heritage (Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, The Frog Prince etc.). This paper introduces the basic guidelines for family reading which is a prerequisite for developing a child's reading literacy. Cross-generational reading within a family is a crucial element which has been substantiated in several documents, such as the two strategic documents on the competences for the 21st century (Key Competences for Lifelong Learning 2018; Road Map for Arts Education 2006). Raising awareness of the meaning of world and national cultural heritage among children, using playful and interesting methods and can be a great means of promoting family reading.
