Marie-Antoinette Hily was born in France in 1946 and received her doctorate in sociology in 1993, with a thesis on the Portuguese in France. She was part of the Migrinte research center in Poitiers, France, between 1996 and 2011. She was director of the Revue Européenne des Migrations Internationales, between 2000 and 2014. She is the author of a vast body of work published in books and scientific journals on migration, residential mobility, migratory circulations and transnational networks.
