    The problem of criteria seems to be of recent origin. It is as if in the course of the Middle Ages the question of canon, archetypes, Byyzantine, traditional, Serbian, Orthodox, was non-existens. ... Today we have come to the point when we condemn and deny the continuity of our own spiritual, cultural and artistic heritage, when we criticize the changes which occured in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Serbian church architecture and painting. If a boundary between the naturalistic and the speculative, between the authoritative and the metaphysical had ever been drawn, for the benefit of Orthodoxy and order in Serbian church architecture and painting, a boundary ought to be drawn again. Expectations and requirements must be codified anew, as a message, a lesseon, a rule. Total and unreserved adherence to the canon. vague understanding of tradition would be rectified if an attempt be made to approach the modern man. Worn out retorts and sterile compilations would shrink before the possibility of innovation. If it is true that up to the eighteenth century an icon had a mightier force of persuasiveness for the faithful, and that it was with this icon as a source of conviction that the artist was approached, then, with a firm confidence in learning and art, unwanted change could be faced, misunderstanding overcome and order restored in the conception of criteria.
