  • Development and application of geosynthetic reinforced soil bridge abutments = Elektronski vir
    Lenart, Stanislav
Development of geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) bridge abutments at Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute (ZAG) started in 2013 with an assumption that this kind of bridge ... abutments will decrease stresses in subgrade soil and thus decrease also ground settlements. Thus one could avoid the use of deep pile foundations in case of difficult geotechnical conditions. Such an approach could also decrease costs of a project. Basic materials, i.e. gravel and geogrid were tested within the research. Special testing equipment was developed to enable deformation properties testing of reinforced soil. Extra-large samples of reinforced soil, height of 2 m and cross section 1 m x 1 m were tested. The project resulted in design guidelines for reinforced soil bridge abutments. The design procedure was tested on prototype structure, which has been constructed in December 2014.
