Negative Emotionen als Antriebskraft in Josef Winklers Frühwerk

Emotions can be themes of literary texts and they can also be expressed directly in literary texts. In both cases they can elicit positive and/or negative emotions in readers. Accordingly, emotions ...play an important part in the production of and the readerʼs reception of literature. Those factors as well as the attitude of literary studies towards emotions as a literary theme depend on social circumstances and literary periods. This article surveys the significance and the form of emotions in autobiographically-tinged Anti-Heimatroman novels within New Subjectivity as a literary period where emotions take centre stage, as well as how emotions as a sign of self-concernment of the author are described and communicated to the reader. In the centre of attention are the autobiographical novels of the Austrian author Josef Winkler - Menschenkind, Der Ackermann aus Kärnten and Muttersprache - where Winkler repeatedly describes emotions caused by his personal experiences and childhood traumas.
