  • Kontrastivni vidiki prevajanja italijanskih neosebnih glagolskih oblik v slovenščino : korpusna analiza gerundija
    Mikolič Južnič, Tamara
Non-finite verbal structures seem to be relatively rare in Slovene compared to other languages such as Italian. This may pose a problem to the Slovene learners of foreign languages both when creating ... texts in the foreign language and when translating into their mother tongue. This article focuses on some contrastively relevant features of the Italian gerund (one of the Italian non-finite verb forms), and particularly on the options available to translators when they need to translate implicit dependant gerundial clauses into Slovene. After a brief presentation of the most prominent features and functions of the Italian gerund and an overview of the Slovene non-finite structures available, the results of a corpus analysis of the Italian-Slovene section of the Spook translation corpus are given. It seems that in literary texts, the most common structures occurring in Slovene as translation equivalents to the Italian gerunds are finite verbs functioning as predicates of either co-ordinate or subordinate clauses. Other structures, including nominal translations, Slovene non-finite forms and some alternative, context-dependant translation equivalents, occur with a much lesser frequency.
