  • Comparison of modal analysis and equivalent lateral force procedutre for seismic analysis of buildings
Fajfar, Peter, 1943- ; Jiang, Yi ; Fischinger, Matej
In the codes the Equivalent Lateral Force Procedure (ELF) and/or the Modal Analysis Procedure (MA) are used for the seismic analysis of buildings. The two procedures yield different results even if ... the same seismic coefficient is used in both cases. The difference depends on the characteristics of the structure and on the shape of the design spectrum. For the typical design spectra used in the codes, the base shear obtained by ELF may be more than 50% greater for regular symmetric buildings and more than 100% greater for regular non-symmetric buildings with a uniform distribution of stiffness and mass along their building. The difference may even be much larger in the case of irregular buildings. Important discrepancies can be observed also in over-turning moments an in distribution of loading to different sctural elements. In the paper the inconsistency of the results obtained by both methods is presented in a systematic way
