  • Primerjalna analiza življenjskega cikla prečno lepljenega lesa v proizvodni fazi = Comparative production phase life cycle assessment of cross-laminated timber
    Gjerkeš, Henrik ; Ilc, Slavica
ife cycle assessment (LCA) for cross-laminated timber (CLT ) has been performed to compare engineered wood products to traditional building materials and to estimate the potential environmental ... impact of wood as a sustainable alternative for concrete and brick in construction. Calculated LCA output-depended categories in production phase (cradle to gate) show that insulated CLT wall environmentally outperforms insulated brick and concrete wall in almost all impact categories, except in the energy demand. However, considering energy of the sequestered carbon dioxide stored in the wood, which can be used in the end of life phase of the building as renewable energy resource, the CLT composite wall has the lowest life cycle environmental impact of three analysed walls even from the energy utilization point of view. Comparative production phase LCA of the CLT shows that wood has a high potential of mitigating climate change and other environmental impact in construction. Cascading use of forest biomass is important both in terms of the value added and the environmental impacts, as well as for more decisive shift of the economy towards a low-carbon society.
