  • Role of thermal storage for panel heating and cooling of buildings

    New technologies that can use renewable energy sources (like solar energy) are becoming more and more popular. One of those is panel heating that works on low temperature scale. This article deals ... with the role of thermal storage on the performance of this kind of heating and cooling of buildings. In the first part of the article we present radiant panel heating in general and the physical principles of heat transfer as well as the importance of thermal mass. Mathematical model for unsteady state heat transfer in the panel is explained in the continuation. The model is founded on heat conduction from heat source (hot or cold pipe) through material of the wall (concrete, brick, wood) into the air of the room. The calculations are made with the help of finite-difference method. The results show time variations of heat released from the panel at different material and different material of the wall when heat source is turned on.
