The paper deals with the basic principles of fabricating fixed denture retainers regarding retention on the tooth, aesthetic appearence and in particular the relationship to the periodontium. The ...gingival margin of the retainer should be level with the gingiva. The optimal relationship of the metal framework to the gingiva is achieved in the Maryland bridge, which is unfortunately suitable only for replacing a single missing tooth.
