This collection reconsiders the notion of life and conceptualizes those forms of life which have been excluded from modern philosophy, such as post-Anthropocene life, the life of non-human animals ...and the life of inorganic objects.
The contributors, who include prominent contemporary philosophers and theorists ask a wide range of questions including: what new forms of subjection can we see with the return of the 'Anthropos'?, what can animals teach us in the Anthropocene?, can we reconstruct the perceptual world of animals and take a look into their 'subjectivity'?, what happens to inorganic matter (waste or digital objects) when no longer used by any subject and can we think about inorganic matter in terms of subjective self-awareness?
The first section, Life Beyond the Anthropocene, critically questions Anthropocene theory and outlines alternative scenarios, such as Gaia theory or post-Anthropocene forms of life on Earth and other planets, as well as new forms of subjectivity. The second part, Human and Non-Human Interactions, investigates the obscure boundary, between life and non-life, and between human and non-human animal life forms. The third part, Forms of Life and New Ontologies, concentrates on new ontologies and discusses life in terms of vitalism, new materialism, movement, form-taking activity and plasticity.
In this essay I will discuss Donna J. Haraway’s notion of sympoiesis and examine different modes of cohabitation or hybridization with nonhuman others. Such concepts as sympoiesis, or holobiont, ...question the notion of the biological individual and also change our understanding of what it means to be human. As Richard Grusin pointed out, “we have never been human” because “the human has always coevolved, coexisted, or collaborated with the nonhuman—and that the human is characterized precisely by this indistinction from the nonhuman” (ix–x). We have never been human because we have always been dependent on other species living within or beyond our bodies. However, the question which still needs to be answered is whether all forms of coexistence are profitable and welcomed. How does one define the limit at which this co-existence is collaborative and productive (“posthuman”), and beyond which it becomes damaging and lethal (in other words, “posthumous,” e.g., coming after life)? For this reason, the interrelations between different life forms should be discussed together with the concepts of contagion and immunity. The notion of immunity expresses an ambivalent character of life: on the one hand, it protects the organism against everything that is beyond its boundary; on the other hand, it helps to collaborate with other organisms and to create an ecosystem. In this sense, immunity can be thought as a field of negotiations between human and nonhuman beings.

Taip Simondon’as sukuria universalią individuacijos teoriją, kurią suvokia kaip perėjimą nuo ikiindividualios būklės prie individą sukuriančio individuacijos proceso, kuris savo ruožtu tampa naujos individuacijos pradžia. Galima teigti, jog Simondon’as ontologijos pagrindu laiko ne tapatybę, bet neatitikimą ir skirtumą, kurie verčia individus pereiti į naują egzistencijos fazę ar lygmenį. Taip individuacijos teorija tampa universalia metodologija, leidžiančia palyginti fizinius, biologinius, psichinius ir techninius individuacijos procesus. Simondon’o sukurta individuacijos,arba ontogenezės, teorija laikytina materialistine metodologija, kuri pagrindžia sąsajas tarp organinių ir neorganinių, žmogiškų ir nežmogiškų individų.
The article discusses the development of the Gaia Hypothesis as it was defined by James Lovelock in the 1970s and later elaborated in his collaboration with biologist Lynn Margulis. Margulis’s ...research in symbiogenesis and her interest in Maturana and Varela’s theory of autopoiesis helped to reshape the Gaia theory from a first-order systems theory to second-order systems theory. In contrast to the first-order systems theory, which is concerned with the processes of homeostasis, second-order systems incorporate emergence, complexity and contingency. In this respect Latour’s and Stengers’s takes on Gaia, even defining it as an “outlaw” or an anti-system, can be interpreted as specific kind of systems thinking. The article also discusses Haraway’s interpretation of Gaia in terms of sympoiesis and argues that it presents a major reconceptualization of systems theory.
The article discusses the notion of the Anthropocene as a kind of anthropological machine, closely related to the regime of visuality. Giorgio Agamben points out that the anthropological machine is ...always an optical machine, which helps to induce visibility as an essential element of power. Similarly, Nicholas Mirzoeff discusses Anthropocene visuality as a technique which is always hierarchical and autocratic, helping to maintain the visualizer’s material power. Mirzoeff suggests that the biopolitical effects of visuality can be confronted by “countervisuality”, a strategy, which abandons visuality in order to achieve political equality. However, in this article I will argue that Anthropocene visuality should not be abandoned but rather reversed or redirected. In this regard, reversed visuality would mean not the replacement of the aesthetic with the political, but, on the contrary, the replacement of anthropocentric aesthetics with a different kind of aesthetics, which includes a non-human or not-quitehuman gaze. If Anthropocene visuality silently presumes that the place from which it represents will remain forever intact, then post-Anthropocene visuality demonstrates that the mechanisms of exclusion and subjection are easily interchangeable and that every living being can potentially bec ome “bare life”.
SStraipsnyje detaliai analizuojama tikrovės sąvoka, kuri interpretuojama kaip teorinis įrankis, leidžiantis pasiprie šinti postmodernioms diskurso teorijoms. Slovėnų filosofas Slavojus Žižekas ...tikrovės sąvoką pasiskolina iš Jacques'o Lacano psichoanalizės; Žižeko teigimu, tikrovė yra nereprezentuojamas, trauminis branduolys, plytintis "kažkur anapus" simbolinės tvarkos. Remdamasis šia tikrovės samprata, Žižekas kritikuoja postmodernias diskurso teorijas, negalinčias paaiškinti, kas yra anapus diskurso ir kaip įmanoma apibrėžti paties diskurso ribas. Judith'os Butler ir Charles'o Shepherdsono kritika atskleidė Žižeko pozicijos prieštaringumą: net jei teigiame, jog tikrovė sukuria diskurso ribas, šias ribas galime aptikti tik remdamiesi diskursyviomis praktikomis. Atsižvelgdamas į kritiką, Žižekas patikslino savo koncepciją: dabar tikrovė yra ne transcendentinis anapus, kurį veltui bando įvardyti simbolinė reikšmės struktūra, bet tai, kas priklauso simbolinei tvarkai. Kitaip tariant, tikrovė negali būti įvardijama ne dėl to, kad ji yra išoriška simbolinei tvarkai, bet dėl to, kad ji šiai tvarkai priklauso, yra jos vidinė riba. Tačiau ši tikrovės aiškinimo versija, interpretuojanti tikrovę kaip vidinę simbolinės reikšmės struktūros ribą, darosi paradoksaliai artima postmodernioms diskurso teorijoms. Taigi tikrovės sąvokos apibrėžimai reflektuoja "postmodernaus proto antinomiją": tiesioginė nuoroda į tikrovę rodosi per daug naivi, jog būtų laikoma filosofiniu problemos sprendimu, o postmoderni diskurso ideologija yra autoreferentiška ir nepajėgi nurodyti nieko anapus savęs. Straipsnyje analizuojamos tikrovės sąvokos implikacijos seksualinio, etinio ir politinio diskurso plotmėje, be to, keliamas klausimas, kokias "realias" reikšmes slepia filosofinio "tikrovės sugrįžimo" simptomai.
Dekonstrukcija gali būti apibrėžta kaip filosofinis projektas, interpretacijos metu siekiantis atskleisti tam tikrą prieštaravimą, neišsprendžiamumą, glūdintį filosofiniame tekste. Tai gali būti ...prieštaravimas tarp teksto formuluojamų teiginių ir jo neįsisąmonintų prielaidų, tarp skirtingų to paties termino reikšmių, tarp skirtingų to paties teiginio funkcijų (konstatyvo ir performatyvo). Toks reiškinys senovės graikų filosofijoje buvo vadinamas aporija. Neišsprendžiamumo, arba aporijos, patirtis reikalinga tam, kad rastųsi būtinybė priimti sprendimą. Aporija yra ne tik sprendimo sustabdymas, jo negalimybė, bet ir sprendimo kaip tokio galimybės sąlyga. Postmoderni etika gali būti apibrėžta kaip tokia etika, kuri suspenduoja etinį sprendimą: jis yra arba prievartiškas ir neįvykdomas, todėl atidėtas grynajai ateičiai, arba yra neįmanomas, bet jau įvykęs praeityje. Postmodernios politikos teorijos taip pat parodo politinio sprendimo negalimybę. Aporija, į kurią patenka įstatymas, taip pat suspenduoja politinį sprendimą. Įstatymo negalimybė savo ruožtu taip pat reiškia politikos kaip įstatymo reguliuojamos santykio su kitu erdvės negalimybę.
Straipsnyje analizuojama J. Lacano psichoanalizėje postuluojama trinarė Realios, Įsivaizduojamos ir Simbolinės plotmių struktūra. Šios plotmės laikytinos ne hierarchiškai ar laikiškai organizuotomis, ...bet komplementariai egzistuojančiomis struktūromis. „Realybės“ dimensija pasirodo ne kaip savaiminė duotis, bet kaip Įsivaizduojamos ir Simbolinės reikšmės artikuliacinės veiklos padarinys. Įsivaizduojama plotmė yra siejama su veidrodžio teorija, kuri postuluoja ego ir jo atspindėto arba įsivaizduojamo vaizdinio struktūrą. Simbolinė plotmė yra kalbos ir sociumo sfera. Joje sprendžiama subjekto tariamo ar įsivaizduojamo identiteto formavimosi problema: subjektas yra įrašomas į simbolinį reikšmės artikuliacijų tinklą, kuris yra Kito raiškos vieta. Pasitelkdamas sapno, fantazijos ir traumos koncepcijas, J. Lacanas pateikia tam tikrus „realybės“ ir reprezentacijos sąveikos modelius. Tariama sapno realybė yra ta vieta, kurioje susiduriame su neįmanoma „tikrove“. Fantazija yra įsivaizduojama konstrukcija, įgalinanti susitikimą ar susidūrimą su tiesiogiai nepasirodančia „tikrove“. Psichoanalizės fenomenams būdingas neišbaigtumas, daugiaprasmiškumas bei atvirumas.
