ABSTRACT Irregularity or shortage of rainfall in semi-arid regions forces farmers to use low-quality water to irrigate crops. The present study aimed to assess the water-use efficiency and ...post-harvest quality of ‘Sugar Baby’ mini watermelon in response to different electrical conductivities of the nutrient solution 2.5 (control), 3.5, 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5 dS m-1, in a floating hydroponic system. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replicates. The water consumption, production and water-use efficiency were evaluated, as well as qualitative and physico-chemical variables of the fruits. The total water consumption of the plants during the crop cycle varied between 43 (6.5 dS m-1) and 54 (2.5 dS m-1) L plant-1 among the treatments, with water-use efficiency of 0.031 kg L-1. The greatest reductions due to the nutrient solution salinity were observed for the rind thickness and fruit mass (8.80 and 5.69 %, respectively, per unit increase in dS m-1). The salinity of the nutrient solution did not influence the soluble solids content and fruit maturity index, but it had a negative effect on the pH and titratable acidity.
the use of marginal quality water can be a viable alternative in regions with water scarcity when associated with an adequate irrigation management strategy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ...physiological and biochemical responses of ‘Sugar Baby’ mini watermelon as a function of irrigation management and salinity of the nutrient solution (ECsol). The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse of the Federal University of Recôncavo of Bahia, in the municipality of Cruz das Almas - BA, in a completely randomized design, with four replications. The plants were grown under two types of irrigation management (conventional drip - CD and pulse - PD) and four saline levels of the fertigation nutrient solution (2.5 - control; 4.5; 5.5; 6.5 dS m-1). At 65 days after cultivation, the following variables were evaluated: chlorophyll a and b content, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and organic and inorganic solutes content. The treatments did not influence the levels of chlorophyll a and b. Salinity decreased the quantum yield of photochemical energy conversion due to the increased quantum yield of unregulated energy loss. Irrigation management and water salinity did not affect carbohydrate content in mini watermelons leaves. However, soluble proteins were higher in the CD than in PD and decreased with increasing salinity in both managements. Salinity increased free amino acids in CD but did not change the content of these solutes in PD. Free proline was only influenced by the management system and was higher in CD than in PD. Sodium, chloride, and sodium to potassium ratio increased with ECsol, but these increases were more pronounced in PD. Salinity increased potassium content in PD and reduced in CD. The CD led to lower absorption of toxic ions, reducing the effects of salinity on the mini watermelon.

It was used for both experiments the completely randomized design, with treatments at first a 3 x 2 x 16 factorial, referring to three doses of inorganic waste (RI): 0, 2,5 and 5,0 Mg ha-1 and two doses organic waste (RO): absence and presence in terms divided into 16 times (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84 and 91 days) after initiation of incorporation of treatments and 4 replicates. The amount of organic waste was applied in amounts equivalent to 100 kg N ha-1 (approximately 20 Mg ha-1 of organic waste). The second, in factorial 3 x 2 x 4 using three doses RI: 0, 2.5 and 5.0 Mg ha-1 in the presence and absence of RO applied in quantities equivalent to 100 kg N ha-1, evaluated at 0, 30, 60 and 90 days after incubation with four replications. The addition of RI did not alter soil microbial activity, however being affected by adding the RO. The organic waste showed high recalcitrance. In chemical properties, the incorporation of both residues increased the pH of the soil in the initial phase, but decreased during the study period. The addition of RI increased values of CE, the levels of P, Na, Fe, Cu and Mn at the doses studied and the presence of RO levels N, K and Zn.
