The world’s eyes are on Latin America as a place of radical political inspiration and as an alternative to the neoliberal model. Each country in the region deals differently in its method of ...government, yet there are common cultural themes that tie the continent’s trajectory together. Religion without Redemption looks at the sociology of religion, political philosophy and the history of ideas of the continent, in an attempt to show how Western understanding fails to come close to a correct analysis of how and why political and economic characteristics work as they do. Luis Martínez Andrade focuses on how the centrality of religion for the people of Latin America has influenced how they interact with the changes in the modern economic system. Capitalism, for example, has taken on religious characteristics: it has sacred places of worship (the shopping mall) as well as its own prophets. Martínez Andrade discusses how this form of ‘cultural religion’ accompanies many aspects of life in a contradictory manner: not only does it fulfil the role of legitimating oppression, it also can be a powerful source of rebellion, unveiling thus a subversive side to the status quo. Religion Without Redemption advances the ideas of liberation theory into the 21st century, and challenges the provincialism to which many Latin American thinkers are usually consigned.
The underlying mechanism by which MyD88 regulates the development of obesity, metainflammation, and insulin resistance (IR) remains unknown. Global deletion of MyD88 in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice ...resulted in increased weight gain, impaired glucose homeostasis, elevated Dectin-1 expression in adipose tissue (AT), and proinflammatory CD11c+ AT macrophages (ATMs). Dectin-1 KO mice were protected from diet-induced obesity (DIO) and IR and had reduced CD11c+ AT macrophages. Dectin-1 antagonist improved glucose homeostasis and decreased CD11c+ AT macrophages in chow- and HFD-fed MyD88 KO mice. Dectin-1 agonist worsened glucose homeostasis in MyD88 KO mice. Dectin-1 expression is increased in AT from obese individuals. Together, our data indicate that Dectin-1 regulates AT inflammation by promoting CD11c+ AT macrophages in the absence of MyD88 and identify a role for Dectin-1 in chronic inflammatory states, such as obesity. This suggests that Dectin-1 may have therapeutic implications as a biomarker for metabolic dysregulation in humans.

•MyD88 absence upregulates Dectin-1 in adipose tissue (AT) and AT macrophages (ATMs)•Dectin-1 inhibition decreases CD11c+ ATMs and protects mice from insulin resistance (IR)•Dectin-1 activation increases CD11c+ ATMs and worsens IR•Obese humans have increased Dectin-1 expression in AT
Castoldi et al. identify a role for Dectin-1 in obesity and insulin resistance (IR). Dectin-1 KO mice have decreased CD11c+ adipose tissue (AT) macrophages (ATMs) and are protected from obesity and IR. Increased expression of Dectin-1 in AT correlates with obesity.
Acetaminophen overdose is one of the leading causes of acute liver failure and liver transplantation in the Western world. Magnesium is essential in several cellular processess. The Cyclin M family ...is involved in magnesium transport across cell membranes. Herein, we identify that among all magnesium transporters, only Cyclin M4 expression is upregulated in the liver of patients with acetaminophen overdose, with disturbances in magnesium serum levels. In the liver, acetaminophen interferes with the mitochondrial magnesium reservoir via Cyclin M4, affecting ATP production and reactive oxygen species generation, further boosting endoplasmic reticulum stress. Importantly, Cyclin M4 mutant T495I, which impairs magnesium flux, shows no effect. Finally, an accumulation of Cyclin M4 in endoplasmic reticulum is shown under hepatoxicity. Based on our studies in mice, silencing hepatic Cyclin M4 within the window of 6 to 24 h following acetaminophen overdose ingestion may represent a therapeutic target for acetaminophen overdose induced liver injury.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Praktyka Teoretyczna journal, we have invited our long-lasting collaborators and comrades to reflect once again on the concept of the common and its possible ...futures by posing the following questions: a) what is the most important aspect of the current struggles for the common?; b) what are the biggest challenges for the commonist politics of the future?; and c) where in the ongoing struggles do you see a potential for scaling-up and spreading organisation based on the common? In his reply, Luis Martinez Andrade situates his answer in the Latin American context by drawing our attention to the contemporary struggles of communitarian feminists and indigenous movements.
