Plants of the genus Hibiscus are commonly cultivated in Brazil as ornamentals. Symptoms of leaf spot in Hibiscus tiliaceus trees are frequently observed. The objective of this study was to identify ...and characterize the etiological agent of the H. tiliaceus leaf spot. Leaves with symptoms were collected in Teresina, state of Piauí, Brazil and a Colletotrichum species was consistently isolated from them. Morphological identification, phylogeny of ITS region, GAPDH and ACT genes, a pathogenicity test and re‐isolation of the fungus from symptomatic artificially inoculated plants confirmed Colletotrichum siamense as the causative agent of the disease. This is the first record of C. siamense causing anthracnose in H. tiliaceus in Brazil.
Isolates from the Fusarium fujikuroi species complex, mainly F. sacchari, have been reported to be the causal agents of pokkah boeng in sugarcane in Brazil. However, inadequate information was ...available on the occurrence and genetic diversity of F. sacchari in Northeast Brazil, which is a limiting factor on management. Thus, isolates of F. subglutinans sensu lato from sugarcane plants with symptoms of pokkah boeng were evaluated using the sexual cross‐fertility to determine species. All the isolates produced black perithecia when they were crossed with the test isolates of F. sacchari. Three weeks after the crossing, the formation of fertile ascospores cirri was observed. Thirty‐four isolates were self‐sterile hermaphrodites, while 21 were fertile only as males. Five isolates were homothallic. The effective size Ne(f) of the population as a function of the frequency of hermaphrodites and female sterile strains was 95.5%. The F. sacchari isolates were separated into four genetic groups independent of geographic location. The mean of polymorphism among all populations was 79%, and the average unbiased genetic diversity (uh) was considered moderate (0.31). This study in addition to confirming that F. sacchari as the main species associated with pokkah boeng in sugarcane in Northeast Brazil, reveals the relationship of mating type and genetic diversity of F. sacchari. The unrestricted gene flow between regions is probably the best explanation for the low geographic correlation. This knowledge will help in the adoption of management measures with fungicides or resistant cultivars.
Rose essential oil is rich in compounds widely used by the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry, due to the biological activities it presents. However, obtaining oil is costly, as the yield per plant ...is low, which requires several techniques that aim to increase its production. The application of growth-promoting bacteria has been studied for this purpose. Thus, the objective of this work was to select efficient bacteria for production and evaluate their influence on the phytotechnical characteristics and composition of the essential oils of roses. Seven species of bacteria were evaluated for the potential to promote growth
in vitro
, being tested for nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, protease production and auxin production. From bacteria tested, four were selected and inoculated on rose plants of cultivar Black Prince to evaluate the influence on phytotechnical variables of flower and stem and the oil production. The evaluation of the production of roses was performed through the characteristics of the flowers (size, weight, and diameter of the stem) and floral bud. The essential oils from the inoculated flowers were extracted and evaluated in terms of content, yield, and chemical composition. The application of
B. acidiceler, B. subtilis
and
B. pumilus
resulted in flowers with a diameter up to 29% larger. The floral stem was increased by up to 24.5% when
B. acidiceler
and
B. pumilus
were used. Meanwhile, the stem diameter was around 41% greater in the presence of
B. acidiceler, B. subtilis
and in the control.
Bacillus pumilus
also increased the weight of fresh petals (104%) and essential oil yield (26%), changing the chemical composition of the extracted essential oil. Thus, it is concluded that
B. acidiceler, B. pumilus
, and
B. subtilis
improved the phytotechnical characteristics of roses. Among bacteria,
B. pumilus
increased the essential oil content as well as positively changed the chemical composition of the extracted essential oil.
ABSTRACT Anthracnose, a disease caused by fungi of the Colletotrichum genus, affects many crops, including ornamental plants. This study aimed at evaluating the pathogenicity and aggressiveness of ...the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Penz. (Sacc.) isolates Cg1 (papaya), Cg2 (guava) and Cg3 (mango) in the ornamental pepper varieties Stromboli, Etna and Pirâmide, during two different periods (July/August and November/December 2013). The fungi pathogenicity and the severity of plant symptoms were assessed using a grading scale. The three C. gloeosporioides isolates were pathogenic to the three ornamental pepper varieties studied, exhibiting different levels of aggressiveness among them. The environmental conditions influenced the isolates aggressiveness, with the most severe symptoms observed in the second assessment period.

The effect of acibenzolar S-metil ester (ASM, Bion®), potassium phosfite (Hortifós PK®) and of a foliar fertilizer (Nutex Axcell®) was assessed on the spore germination and mycelial growth of Phoma costarricensis. The effect of these products on severity of Phoma leaf spot was also assessed on coffee seedlings. The percentage of conidial germination of P. costarricensis was not affected by doses of phosfite and ASM, but reductions on the mycelial growth of the fungus were detected. The area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) and the disease severity were lower in all treatments compared to the inoculated control. There was a reduction of 50.9% on disease severity in plants treated with the standard fungicide tebuconazole. Low values for severity and AUDPC were observed when plants were treated with ASM 0.1 g/L; phosfite 2.5 mL/L; phosfite 5.0 mL/L and the fertilizer Nutex Axcell® at 4.0 mL/L, which differed from other treatments.
ABSTRACT The fungi Colletotrichum truncatum and Macrophomina phaseolina are among the main pathogens associated with lima bean seeds in Brazil, and they are the causal agents of anthracnose and ...charcoal rot, respectively. The aim of this study was to verify the seed-seedling transmission of C. truncatum and M. phaseolina in artificially inoculated lima bean seeds. Potato-dextrose-agar (PDA) media with different hydric potentials were obtained after the addition of mannitol. Isolates of C. truncatum and M. phaseolina were peaked to these media. Forty grams of seeds were distributed over the fungal mycelium, remaining there for different exposure periods, as a function of each treatment: T1: 0.0 MPa without inoculum for 48 h; T2: 0.0 MPa for 48 h; T3: -0.2 MPa for 48 h; T4: -0.4 MPa for 48 h; T5: -0.6 MPa for 72 h; T6: -0.8 MPa for 96 h and T7: -1.0 MPa for 120 h. The seeds were incubated at 25 ºC under a 12-hour photoperiod. Germination in a paper roll, emergence of seedlings in sand and seed health in PDA were evaluated. T4 provided the best conditions to temporarily prevent seed germination, promoting a greater incidence of seeds infected by C. truncatum and a greater percentage of diseased plants. M. phaseolina reduced seed germination, independently of the inoculated treatment. Both fungi were transmitted from the seeds to the seedlings of lima bean, causing symptoms in various aerial parts. C. truncatum and M. phaseolina transmission rate was 83.1% and 76.46%, respectively.
Anthracnose caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc. is an important disease of torch ginger Etlingera elatior (Jack) Smith in the Brazilian Northeast. Considering the inexistence of standard methods for assessment of this disease, a diagrammatic scale was developed with 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 82 and 92% of diseased bracts area and tested for accuracy, precision and reproducibility of the estimative of anthracnose severity with and without using the scale. The diagrammatic key was validated by 10 raters, using 45 bracts with different levels of severity. Without the diagrammatic scale most of raters overestimated disease severity. With the scale raters obtained better levels of accuracy and precision, with absolute errors concentrated around 10%. Raters showed great repeatability (95%) and reproducibility ( ³ 90% in 75.6% of cases) of estimative by using the scale. The proposed diagrammatic scale was suitable for the evaluation of torch ginger anthracnose severity.

Anthracnose affects inflorescences quality of ornamentals tropical plants and the fungi specie Colletotrichum gloeosporioides has been related with this disease based only on morphology. Therefore, the objectives of this research was to identify Colletotrichum isolates collected on anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum), torch ginger (Etlingera elatior) and heliconia (Heliconia spp.) plants by means of morphology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and also verify the genetic variability using arbitrary-primed PCR (AP-PCR). All isolates were identified as C. gloeosporioides by conidium and appressorium size. A fragment of 450bp specific for C. gloeosporioides was amplified for all isolates analyzed, except for C 23 and C 35 isolates. The molecular characterization yielded three groups of isolates with different band patterns by using (GACAC)3, (GACA)4 and (CAG)5 AP-PCR. The employed methodologies were efficient to identify the C. gloeosporioides isolates collected on ornamental plants and there isn't relation between similarity of band patterns and geographic region or plant specie on the isolates analyzed.
