Abstract
Background and Objectives
Studies reporting an association between hearing loss and depression in older adults are conflicting and warrant a systematic review and meta-analysis of the ...evidence.
Research Design and Methods
A search of academic databases (e.g., MEDLINE) and gray literature (e.g., OpenGrey) identified relevant articles published up to July 17, 2018. Cross-sectional or cohort designs were included. Outcome effects were computed as odds ratios (ORs) and pooled using random-effects meta-analysis (PROSPERO: CRD42018084494).
Results
A total of 147,148 participants from 35 studies met inclusion criteria. Twenty-four studies were cross-sectional and 11 were cohort designs. Overall, hearing loss was associated with statistically significantly greater odds of depression in older adults (OR = 1.47, 95% confidence interval CI = 1.31−1.65). When studies were stratified by design, hearing loss was associated with greater odds of depression in cross-sectional studies (OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.31−1.80) and cohort studies (OR = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.16 − 1.67), and there was no difference between cross-sectional or cohort effect estimates (Q = 0.64, p = .42). There was no effect of moderator variables (i.e., hearing aid use) on the association between hearing loss and depression, but these findings must be interpreted with caution. There was no presence of publication bias but certainty in the estimation of the overall effect was classified as “low.”
Discussion and Implications
Older adults may experience increased odds of depression associated with hearing loss, and this association may not be influenced by study or participant characteristics.
This study aimed to describe available evidence of cochlear implantation delivery arrangements in adults and the outcomes by which these service models are measured.
Scoping review of English ...language, primary studies conducted on adults (≥18 years) with ten or more subjects, published between January 2000 and June 2022, which assessed the effects of delivery arrangements of cochlear implantation were included. MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL Plus, AMED, PsycINFO, LILACS, KoreaMed, IndMed, Cochrane CRCT, ISRCTN registry, WHO ICTRP and Web of Science were systematically searched. Included studies had to have a method section explicitly measure at least one of the Cochrane Effective Practice and Organization of Care (EPOC) outcome category. Criteria for systematic reviews and delivery arrangement category based on EPOC taxonomy was included in data extraction. Data was narratively synthesized based on EPOC categories.
A total of 8135 abstracts were screened after exclusion of duplicates, of these 357 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Around 40% of the studies investigated how care is delivered, focusing on quality and safety systems. New care pathways to coordinate care and the use of information and communication technology were emerging areas. There was little evidence on continuity, coordination and integration of care, how the workforce is managed, where care is provided and changes in the healthcare environment. The main outcome measure for various delivery arrangements were the health status and performance in a test.
A substantial body of evidence exists about safety and efficacy of cochlear implantation in adults, predominantly focused on surgical aspects and this area is rapidly growing. There is a lack of evidence on aspects of care delivery that may have more impact on patients' experience such as continuity, coordination and integration of care and should be a focus of future research. This would lead to a better understanding of how patient's view CI experience, associated costs and the value of different care models.

A content expert panel survey and cognitive interviews were conducted. Descriptive statistics were obtained for the quantitative data, and the cognitive interviews were analysed using thematic analysis.
Eleven researchers and clinicians participated in the content expert surveys. Sixteen experienced hearing aid users participated in the cognitive interviews, recruited from the USA and Australia.
The items underwent five iterations based on feedback from the survey and interview data. This resulted in a set of 33 quality-tested potential survey items that were rated highly for relevance (mean = 3.96), clarity (mean = 3.70) and fit to dimensions of empowerment (mean = 3.92) (scale 0-4, where 4 was the maximum rating).
Involving stakeholders in item generation and content evaluation increased relevance, clarity, fit to dimension, comprehensiveness, and acceptability of the items. This preliminary version of the 33-item measure underwent further psychometric refinement (Rasch analysis and traditional classical test theory testing) to validate it for clinical and research use (reported separately).
Research shows that organisational efforts to protect their information assets from employee security threats do not always reach their full potential and may actually encourage the behaviours they ...attempt to thwart, such as reactive computer abuse (CA). To better understand this dilemma, we use fairness theory (FT) and reactance theory (RT) to explain why employees may blame organisations for and retaliate against enhanced information security policies (ISPs). We tested our model with 553 working professionals and found support for most of it. Our results show that organisational trust can decrease reactive CA. FT suggests that explanation adequacy (EA) is an important factor that builds trust after an event. Our results also suggest that trust both fully mediates the relationship between EA and CA and partially mediates the relationship between perceived freedom restrictions related to enhanced ISPs and reactive CA. EA also had a strong negative relationship with freedom restrictions. Moreover, organisational security education, training and awareness (SETA) initiatives decreased the perceptions of external control and freedom restrictions and increased EA, and advance notification of changes increased EA. We also included 14 control variables and rival explanations to determine with more confidence what drove reactive CA in our context. Notably, the deterrence theory (DT)‐based constructs of sanction severity, certainty and celerity had no significant influence on reactive CA. We provide support for the importance of respectful communication efforts and SETA programmes, coupled with maximising employee rights and promoting trust and fairness to decrease reactive CA. These efforts can protect organisations from falling victim to their own organisational security efforts.
Protecting information from a variety of security threats is a daunting organizational activity. Organization managers must recognize the roles that organization insiders have in protecting ...information resources rather than solely relying upon technology to provide this protection. Unfortunately, compared to negative insider behaviors, the extant literature provides sparse coverage of beneficial insider activities. The few beneficial activities in the literature represent only a small portion of the diverse collection of insiders' protective actions. This research focuses on protection-motivated behaviors (PMBs), which are volitional behaviors enacted by organization insiders to protect (1) organizationally relevant information and (2) the computer-based information systems in which the information is stored, collected, disseminated, and/or manipulated from information security threats. Based on systematics, we propose a six-step methodology of qualitative and quantitative approaches to develop a taxonomy and theory of diversity for PMBs. These approaches integrate the classification techniques of multidimensional scaling (MDS), property fitting (ProFit), and cluster analyses. We leverage these techniques to identify and display how insiders collectively classify 67 unique PMBs and their homogeneous classes. Our taxonomy provides researchers and practitioners a comprehensive guide and common nomenclature for PMBs. Our methodology can be similarly used to create other theories of diversity.
To explore the lived experience of social challenges and emotional distress in relation to hearing loss and the coping mechanisms employed to manage them.
Two focus groups and two one-on-one ...semi-structured interviews were conducted during February 2020. Transcripts were first inductively analysed to identify experiential categories of social and emotional difficulty, and then deductively analysed using Leventhal's self-regulation model to identify how individuals conceptualised these experiences and the coping mechanisms employed to manage them.
Adults with hearing loss and self-reported emotional distress due to their hearing loss (n = 21) and their significant others (n = 9).
Participants described their social and emotional experiences of hearing loss in terms of negative consequences (social overwhelm, fatigue, loss, exclusion), identity impact (how they perceive themselves and are perceived by others), and emotional distress (frustration, grief, anxiety, loneliness, and burdensomeness). While many participants described a general lack of effective coping strategies, others described employing coping strategies including avoidance (helpful and unhelpful), controlling the listening environment, humour, acceptance, assertiveness, communication repair strategies, and accepting support from significant others.

Empowerment is the process through which individuals with hearing-related challenges acquire and use knowledge, skills and strategies, and increase self-efficacy, participation, and control of their ...hearing health care, hearing solutions, and everyday lives. The aim was to refine and validate the Empowerment Audiology Questionnaire (EmpAQ), a hearing-specific measure of empowerment. This was achieved through (1) refinement via Rasch analysis (study 1), and (2) traditional psychometric analysis of the final survey structure (study 2).
In study 1, 307 adult hearing aid owners completed the initial empowerment measure (33 items) online. To inform an intended item reduction, Rasch analysis was used to assess a range of psychometric properties for individual items. The psychometric properties included analysis of individual items (e.g., response dependency, fit to the polytomous Rasch model, threshold ordering) and the whole EmpAQ (e.g., dimensionality). Item reduction resulted in a 15-item version (EmpAQ-15) and a short-form 5-item version (EmpAQ-5), validated using modern (Rasch), and traditional (Classical Test Theory) psychometric analysis (study 2). In study 2, 178 adult hearing aid owners completed the EmpAQ-15 and EmpAQ-5, alongside 5 questionnaires to measure related constructs. These included two hearing-specific questionnaires (Social Participation Restrictions Questionnaire and Self-Assessment of Communication), two general health-related questionnaires (Patient Activation Measure and World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0), and a general empowerment questionnaire (Health Care Empowerment Questionnaire). Modern (Rasch) and traditional psychometric analysis techniques (internal consistency, construct validity, and criterion validity) were used to assess the psychometric properties of the EmpAQ-15 and EmpAQ-5.
Rasch analysis of the initial 33-item measure of empowerment identified 18 items with high response dependency, poor fit to the Rasch model, and threshold disordering, which were removed, resulting in a long-form (EmpAQ-15) hearing-specific measure of empowerment. A short-form (EmpAQ-5) version was developed for use in the clinic setting. Validation of the two EmpAQ measures using Rasch analysis showed good item fit to the Rasch model, appropriate threshold targeting, and the existence of unidimensionality. Traditional psychometric evaluation showed that both questionnaires had high internal consistency and positive correlations with the hearing-specific questionnaires. However, in contrast with our hypotheses, correlations with general health questionnaires were stronger than with hearing-specific questionnaires; all questionnaires were correlated with the EmpAQ and in the direction hypothesized. Taken together, these findings support the construct validity of the EmpAQ-15 and EmpAQ-5.
The EmpAQ-15 and EmpAQ-5 are the first self-report measures to be developed specifically for the measurement of empowerment. The EmpAQ-15 and EmpAQ-5 were found to meet the Rasch model criteria for interval-level measurements. Traditional psychometric evaluation supports the construct validity of both measures. The EmpAQ measures have the potential to be used in both research and clinical practice to evaluate empowerment along the hearing journey. The next stage of this research will be to further validate these measures by assessing their responsiveness, minimal clinically important difference, and clinical interpretability in a clinical population.
Objective: To systematically review and analyse experimental outcomes of studies exploring the impact of tinnitus upon cognitive function and their implications for clinical management of invasive ...tinnitus. Design: A systematic and descriptive review. Study sample: Eighteen studies were identified investigating the impact of tinnitus on cognitive function. Results: The 18 studies evaluated cognitive function using 24 different objective behavioural tests, nine electrophysiological recordings, one oculomotor test, and one self-report questionnaire. The studies spanned 18 years and revealed numerous interactions potentially contributing to the cognitive difficulties frequently reported by people with invasive tinnitus. The studies indicate a clear association between tinnitus and aspects of cognitive function, specifically the executive control of attention. Conclusions: Tinnitus impairs cognitive function by way of impact upon executive control of attention. Clinical management of patients reporting tinnitus and cognitive difficulties requires an understanding of the reciprocal relationship between tinnitus and cognitive function, with additive effects of anxiety, depression, and somatic cognitive bias. Further study is required to establish the impact of advancing age, hearing loss, anxiety, depression tinnitus duration, and distress upon cognitive function in people with invasive tinnitus.
Recently, there has been a movement towards pay openness in the workplace. However, the pay communication literature is narrow in scope, considering only a limited range of outcomes, which makes the ...reasoning for this recent trend of pay openness practices hard to determine. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to encourage expansion of the pay communication research, specifically focusing on pay openness practices. A definitive description of pay communication, as well as its two extremes (pay openness and pay secrecy) are provided. Additionally, a typology of the two aspects of pay communication (organizational restriction and employee restriction) that has been identified from the literature is developed. Based on the organizational justice framework, propositions are developed for pay openness practices' influence on previously overlooked dependent variables such as workplace deviance, organizational citizenship behaviors, organizational commitment, and perceived organizational support. Several propositions, models, and additional new directions are presented for future research.

Specific brain circuits have been classically linked to dedicated functions. However, compensation following brain damage suggests that these circuits are capable of dynamic adaptation. Such ...compensation is exemplified by Pavlovian fear conditioning following damage to the dorsal hippocampus (DH). Although the DH normally underlies contextual fear and fear renewal after extinction, both can be learned in the absence of the DH, although the mechanisms and nature of this compensation are currently unknown. Here, we report that recruitment of alternate structures, specifically the infralimbic and prelimbic prefrontal cortices, is required for compensation following damage to the hippocampus. Disconnection of these cortices in DH-compromised animals and immediate early gene induction profiles for amygdala-projecting prefrontal cells revealed that communication and dynamic rebalancing within this prefrontal microcircuit is critical. Additionally, the infralimbic cortex normally plays a role in limiting generalization of contextual fear. These discoveries reveal that plasticity through recruitment of alternate circuits allows the brain to compensate following damage, offering promise for targeted treatment of memory disorders.
