The work of school principals includes a variety of tasks, and cooperation with parents of students can be singled out as an extremely sensitive and demanding area. In recent times, principals are often exposed to various impermissible behaviours and violence from parents at their workplace, but little is known and talked about. The aim of this research is to examine the role of exposure to violence by students’ parents in predicting job satisfaction of primary school principals in the Republic of Croatia. The survey included 483 (27.7 % male, 72.3 % female) school principals from all regions of the Republic of Croatia. The Socio-Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire, the Exposure to Parental Violence Scale and the Job Satisfaction Questionnaire were used to collect data. The results show that it is a widespread phenomenon, and 80.75 % of principals experienced at least one form of parental violence during their principalship. Correlation analysis found that principals who are more likely to experience parental violence report lower job satisfaction, and regression analysis showed that experienced violence was a statistically significant predictor of job satisfaction. A clear condemnation of all forms of parental violence against principals and the application and improvement of existing regulations are concluded as necessary conditions for reducing these negative phenomena and enabling quality work of principals, and thus the whole school.
Since poverty has been striking an increasing number of children and young people, it is necessary to indicate its possible effects on their school and life outcomes. Therefore, based on literature, this paper focuses on analysing factors of risk and processes which explain how growing up in poverty and material deprivation directly and indirectly affects school performance and educational outcomes of children. The paper points to negative effects in the early period of children’s lives which is crucial in forming skills and abilities that are important for further academic achievement. Multiple defects they start their education with endanger their progress and success at all levels of education (early, school and graduate). A combination of poverty and low school achievement is often the reason for leaving school or completing a lower level of education and is also associated with lower chances for employment and opportunities for leaving the cycle of poverty. Finally, the paper presents suggestions for developing strategies, early and later interventions and providing multiple supports to families and children in realizing their potential, and achieving success, in both school and life.
The prevalence of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is increasing, partly due to a lack of physical activity. In a cross-sectional study with 18,216 pupils (5th, 6th, and 8th grades) from four ...Croatian counties using the forward bend test (FBT; presumed AIS), the prevalence of AIS and its correlation with physical activity were evaluated. Pupils with presumed AIS were less physically active than their peers without scoliosis (
< 0.001). Abnormal FBT was more prevalent among girls than boys (8.3% vs. 3.2%). Boys were more physically active than girls (
< 0.001). Pupils with presumed AIS were less physically active than their peers without scoliosis (
< 0.001). A higher prevalence of presumed AIS was found among inactive or just recreationally active schoolchildren than among those engaged in organized sports (
= 0.001), girls especially. Pupils with presumed AIS were less active and had fewer weekly sports sessions than their peers without scoliosis (
< 0.001). Notably low prevalence of AIS was detected among pupils engaged in soccer (2.8%,
< 0.001), handball (3.4%,
= 0.002), and martial arts (3.9%,
= 0.006), while it was higher than expected in swimming (8.6%,
= 0.012), dancing (7.7%,
= 0.024), and volleyball (8.2%,
= 0.001) participants. No difference was detected for other sports. A positive correlation was found between time spent using handheld electronic devices and the prevalence of scoliosis (r
= 0.06,
< 0.01). This study confirms the increasing prevalence of AIS, particularly among less athletic girls. Further, prospective studies in this field are required to explain whether the higher prevalence of AIS in these sports is due to referral or other aspects.
Najnižu vjerojatnost intervencije imaju učitelji s niskom kompetentnosti i niskom percepcijom ozbiljnosti nasilja, a najvišu vjerojatnost intervencije imaju učitelji koji imaju visoke razine kompetentnosti i procjenjuju nasilje ozbiljnim.
In recent times, teachers are considered to play a key role in dealing with the problem of peer violence and their competence is very important for quality interventions. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between competence and perceived severity of a violent situation in predicting teacher intervention in cases of peer violence. The research was conducted on a nationally representative sample (N = 639) of primary school teachers in the Republic of Croatia, average age 43 years (SD = 10,599). In addition to the socio-demographic characteristics questionnaire, data was collected via Vignettes and the Self- Assessment Competence Scale for Teachers’ Work on Peer Violence Problems. In addition to the analysis of the basic determinants of competence, it was found that teachers who are more competent will assess violence somewhat more seriously than their less competent colleagues, and those who perceive violence more seriously will also intervene more often. The results show that competence has a significant predictive role in predicting interventions, and in this respect the severity of violence has a moderating effect. Teachers with low competence and low perception of the severity of violence have the lowest probability of intervention, and teachers with high levels of competence who assess violence as serious have the highest probability of intervention.
Introduction: The study aimed to examine the prevalence of sports outside of regular school classes among primary and secondary school students. The secondary aim was to study the correlation of ...physical activity, students’ socioeconomic status and parents’ level of education with students’ educational outcomes.
Material and Methods: Data were collected from medical records of the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance in the Osijek-Baranja County and through regular physical examination of students in the fifth and eighth grade of primary school and the first grade of secondary school.
Results: Over a 5-year period, 120 boys and 141 girls were examined; 66.28% of the students were involved in sports activities in the fifth grade, 49.04% were involved in sports in the eighth grade, and in the first grade, 43.68% of students were involved in sports. No statistically significant differences were observed in the seventh and eighth grade of primary school (p = 0.076) and in the first grade of secondary school (p = 0.057). Students in the seventh and eighth grade who played sports had slightly higher grades (4.45 ± 0.68) compared to those who did not participate in sports activities (4.3 ± 0.69). Similar results were obtained for students who were involved in sports in the first grade of secondary school, who had achieved slightly better results in the seventh grade (4.41 ± 0.69) compared to those who did not participate in sports activities (4.41 ± 0,69).
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that physical activity in children could be associated with better school performance, which may have implications for sports having positive health benefits in both childhood and adulthood.

Recently, the topic of violence in schools is being addressed more often as part of research studies. So far, very little is known about vertical violence that ascends from teachers and other staff ...towards the school principal. The aim of this study was to examine the association between experiencing violence in the workplace and satisfaction with work and life among primary school principals in the Republic of Croatia. This study included a total of 483 principals (27.7% male and 72.3% female) from different regions across the Republic of Croatia. Relevant data were collected using the Socio- Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire, the Workplace Harassment Scale, the Life Satisfaction Scale, as well as the Job Satisfaction Survey. Our results show that as many as 55.5% of the participants reported experiencing at least one form of violence in their workplace on a regular basis, while 40.8% reported experiencing some form of violence more rarely. Only 3.7% of the participants reported that they had not experienced any form of violence. Based on correlation analyses, we found that principals who were more likely to experience violence in the workplace reported lower work and life satisfaction. In addition, regression analyses showed that violence experienced in the workplace was a statistically significant individual predictor of job satisfaction. Principals who were more likely to be exposed to violence in the workplace also reported lower life satisfaction in general and job satisfaction was a significant mediator in this regard. Our findings highlight the need to prevent incidents of school violence against principals since this could result in harmful consequences with respect to the school staff and their relationships, and subsequently reflect poorly on the students and reputation of the school.
The article problematizes two universal problems in modern schools – peer violence and experiencing boredom in the classroom, and their interconnectedness. The results of research conducted among 604 ...students with an average age of 13.9 years show that these are relatively common among adolescents and that academic boredom is a significant predictor of victimization and the commission of traditional and electronic peer violence, which should be taken into account when creating prevention programs.

The objective of this study is to examine the prevalence of violence against teachers by students. The study included 175 teachers, five primary and five secondary schools. The age of respondents ...(teachers) ranges from 20 to 65, with average age being 44,33 years. The used instrument has assessed violence against teachers and has consisted of data about the characteristics of respondents, frequency and type of violence experienced from students. The results suggest that violence against teachers in primary and secondary schools in Zagreb taken in to sample is very much present. Since 74,3% teachers has experienced violence from their students during the year that kind of behavior is more of a rule than an exception. Students in primary and secondary schools show violent behavior against their teachers at an equal level. Male teachers, as opposed to female teachers, are more frequently victims of violent behavior (posting inappropriate content online) from their students. Also, there is a statistically significant correlation (negative) between age (years of service in school) and frequency of experienced violence from students.
Abstract Members of the net generations are born and grow up in a digital world. They are different in attitudes and behavior from their parents and teachers who had to adopt to digital trends. The ...introductory of the paper part analyzes their typical characteristics and their special, new-millennium style of learning and gaining knowledge. These skills which are supported by leading contemporary paradigms (constructivism and connectivism) have prompted interesting changes in theory and practice of education, yet frequently neglecting upbringing outcomes. Therefore, this paper, based on the researched literature, examines possible influences of digital media on forming habits and creating new patterns of behavior that are practiced in learning and everyday activities such as speed, multitasking, searching for information and their immediate profitability and wide span of attention, which results in lack of patience, perseverance, superficiality, thoughtlessness and physical and mental laziness. Although the new wave of Internet usage is being associated with positive educational qualities such as sharing, mutual help, support, honesty and tolerance, there are also some negative sides of it, especially irresponsible and incorrect behavior towards others (electronic violence, disrespect for intellectual property), but also oneself (false self-presentation, (no) self- criticism and invasion of privacy). Since modern technology is forming the young generation and becoming an important force in shaping the modern society, the conclusion emphasizes that with positive changes in educational domain, attention should also be paid to developing educational qualities such as perseverance, consistency, patience, criticism and self- criticism, responsible behavior, mutual respect and appreciation. It should be noted that, in Croatian language, education and upbringing are different terms, which is why in the English version we used the terms education and upbringing separately. Key words: educational outcomes, moral behavior, upbringing qualities, patience, perseverance --- Sažetak Pripadnici net generacije rođeni su i odrastaju u digitalnom svijetu, a razlikuju se od svojih digitalno „priučenih“ roditelja i učitelja po stavovima i ponašanju.
The aim of this paper is to examine the predictive role of perceived teacher’s efficacy in assessing the severity of violence, predicting interventions, and selecting strategies in cases of peer ...violence. The research was conducted on a representative sample (N = 639) teachers in Croatia. Teachers with a higher perception of teacher’s efficacy are more inclined to assess violence more seriously and are more likely to intervene, and those who assess violence more seriously will intervene more often.
