Massimiliano Tomba, Strati di tempo. Karl Marx materialista storico, Jaca Book, Milano 2010.
In this article the author reviews the book Strati di tempo. Karl Marx materialista storico (Jaca Book, ...Milano 2010) by Massimiliano Tomba, reconsidering it in a wider conceptual-philosophical, cultural-historical, and social-political context. Just like Tomba in his study, the author emphasizes the thoughts of Karl Marx, especially historical materialism, which represents a framework for rethinking the time, the history, and the (possibility of) revolution, as well as the state of the left today.
This article analyses the main lines of philosophical anthropology in the work of Antonio Gramsci, pointing out the fundamental conditionality between anthropology and politics in his reflections. ...Conditionality which is mediated by the concept of ideology, that Gramsci developed along the lines as Labriola thought, although Gramsci goes much beyond Labriola. For Gramsci, ideology is structural component of interpersonal relationships. At the same time ideology produces dichotomy between self-representation and material existence. This dichotomy can be overcome only through political action; which is, according to Gramsci central human activity because man is essentially a political being.

The intention of this article is to show present-day relevance of analyses of capitalist society mechanisms contained within the Communist Manifesto. Drawing on different examples from recent ...history, the paper illustrates significance of the argument that bourgeoisie has often played a revolutionary role in history. I argue that an inherent characteristic of capitalism is to continuously transform conditions of human life together with transforming ethical principles and customs of modern society. This is discernible in the ability of modern society to remove any critical or subversive content from thought and practice and to turn it into something socially acceptable. Global capital not only renders this content socially acceptable but also turns it into profit. The paper ends by providing evidence that the conditions of bourgeois society in a globalised world, as Marx and Engels predicted, are too narrow to comprise the wealth that is created by them.
The paper analyzes the question of whether Pasolini had sketched out in his writings a philosophy of education as a critique of the consumerist society. By linking his unfinished pedagogical essay ...with some of his later writings, the determination of his position towards both education itself and the consumerist society, as well as the education of young people for critical thinking is attempted. This raises the question of the limits and objectives of the emancipatory pedagogy in mass society. Furthermore, the paper seeks to explore the influence of Gramsci’s thought and philosophy of praxis in Pasolini’s understanding and critique of social reality.
This article examines Gianni Vattimo’s book-cum-political autobiography Ecce comu. Come si
diventa ciò che si era (Rome, Fazi Editore, 2007). The principle value of this work lies in its discussion ...of the current political and theoretical position of the father of weak thought in relation
to developments in his philosophical thought and his personal life. Vattimo’s position has been
directly influenced by the concrete historical moment of widening economical differences and
dominant “economicism”. More than any other previous work, in this book Vattimo calls for the
need to think a communist ideal. With regard to the question over whether it is possible to be a
communist today, Vattimo responds that not only is it a possibility but an imperative. In other
words, if post-metaphysical philosophy of the present world intends to remain non-dogmatic, it
must rediscover an anarchistic, libertarian and anti-totalitarian communism. Consequently, one
of the goals of this paper is to explore what Vattimo means by being a Communist and his idea of
Communism. The paper demonstrates that the Communism Vattimo has in mind is not a model
of a perfect society but an ideal to follow in order to realize a truly democratic society.

On 6th June 2017 many colleagues, friends and pupils of Nicolao Merker met at the Department of Philosophy of the University "La Sapienza" in Rome, in order to remember the great scholar after few months of his death. It was the occasion for reflecting on the important role played by Merker in the Italian culture of the last decades, as well as on the most relevant themes which were at the core of his long and prolific intellectual path: from the political and cultural history of modern Germany to the transformations of Marxism, from the nationalism/colonialism nexus to the populist issue. The focus published in this issue of the <<Journal of Constitutional History>> gathers the contributions of that day of studies, in a polyphonic dialogue which is also an endorsement of the extraordinary richness and modernity of that research path. Parole chiave / Keywords: Storia della Germania, marxismo, nazionalismo, colonialismo, populismo / History of Germany, Marxism, nationalism, colonialism, populism.
The intention of this short essay is to present Carlo Cattaneo’s conception of the nation. Since Cattaneo never wrote an essay where he gave an exhaustive explanation of this concept, this paper ...develops on the basis of outlines made by Nicolao Merkel in the book Il sangue e la terra (2001). In particular, this essay seeks to demonstrate that Cattaneo explicated the nature of nation starting with objective connotations, without overlooking that these connotations are pondered by human conscience, the modern nation being a product of social life. Consequently the paper highlights that the modern nation in Cattaneo is presented as being primordial to the origin of civil society and at the same time, intimately connected to the idea of freedom and equality. Finally, the paper tries to highlight the similarity between Cattaneo’s locality principal and the austro-marxist proposal of the cultural autonomy as defined by Otto Bauer.
