In the Progressive Era, sociology and institutional economics shared some important methodological principles and theoretical constructs. This study explores some of these similarities, focusing on ...the ideas and theories of Albion Small and Franklin Giddings, who were the most important sociologists in the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. Since the literature on the history of the interdisciplinarity of economics and sociology is somewhat scarce, this study aims to contribute to this historiography by considering the methodological and theoretical underpinnings of early institutional economics - mainly from the standpoint of Veblenian institutional economics.
During the late 1950s, institutionalists started organizing themselves amid the decline of institutional economics, leading to the 1965 founding of the Association for Evolutionary Economics (AFEE). ...We analyze the history of the movement to found AFEE and its early years. We use archival evidence, much of it previously unpublished, to provide a detailed history of these early years. We also present an account of AFEE that highlights the role of different interpretations of institutional economics in building the association. In addition, we provide a brief history of the early years of the Journal of Economic Issues (JEI).
In the 1940s and 1950s, institutionalist economists rapidly lost their influence over American economics. In parallel, a new mainstream emerged, and the institutionalists were extremely dissatisfied ...with the path taken by the economic science. We analyze the opinions and feelings about this context to shed light on the institutionalists' understanding of the new mainstream economics. We construct a historical account of the institutionalists' dissatisfaction with post-war economics based on archival material from the personal papers of Allan Gruchy, John Gambs, John Blair, and Clarence Ayres. In the period analyzed, the economists, who would later found the Association for Evolutionary Economics, acted as dissenters rather than institutionalists. In part, this explains the pluralistic path that the association has followed ever since its foundation.
This paper reviews the historical, archaeological and antiquarian vicissitudes of one of the most interesting bronze artefacts preserved in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale of Parma, Italy. The ...statuette is the renowned 'Drunken Herakles'(Hercules bibax)found in July 1760 in the site of Veleia, on the Apennines near Piacenza, Italy. The cultural and historical background of this finding is a sort of prestige competition between the Duke of Parma and his brother, king of Naples and Sicily, patron of the sensational archaeological discoveries of the Vesuvian area (Pompeii, Herculaneum etc.). The Drunken Herakles find in Veleia sparked further research in the site and in 1761 twelve marble statues were found near the basilica of the forum. These artefacts, mainly ascribed to the Julio-Claudian times, are still considered among the most relevant sculptural cycles of the Imperial period. However, from the 1960s the Herakles was seen as a 18th century forgery, mostly because of its style and because of the incompleteness of archival research. In the previous pages issues of style will be seen in the light cast by recent archival findings, while archaeometric and photogrammetric data will be added. This will delete once and for all any allegation of forgery.
Abstract This paper verifies the evolution of the remuneration pattern of different higher-level careers within the Brazilian federal executive branch from 1998 to 2015. In recent years, the differences in remuneration have substantially increased in the Brazilian civil service. However, the results obtained through cluster analysis suggest a pattern of greater pay raise for “typical state careers” to the detriment of others. This reveals a pattern of salary appreciation within the executive branch and, especially, an internal distributive conflict, in which those careers closer to the central power and with characteristics of “typical state careers” were gradually benefiting, establishing a major change in the relative remuneration pattern among different careers over the studied period.
Abstract This article investigates the American influences on Roberto Simonsen's social and economic thought. Simonsen was deeply influenced by important elements of American social and economic science, particularly by the institutionalist economics and the science/philosophy of social control. Taking into consideration the international literature on early twentieth-century American social and economic science, this paper stresses that Simonsen was indeed influenced by an American thought that was deeply prominent and modern for the period.
Clarence Ayres was a strong dissenting voice in US economics during the twentieth century. In the 1930s, a debate between Ayres and Frank Knight was published by the International Journal of Ethics. ...Although the debate focused on ethics, the evolution of economics was also discussed. This paper proposes an understanding of Ayres’s ideas based on the context in which he made them. This context is defined by the 1930s Ayres-Knight debate and the archival correspondence between Ayres and Knight during the 1930s.
This article identifies the connections between original institutional economics and communitarian philosophy. For instance, both share the common emphasis on the cultural conditioning of human ...agency. Moreover, they present a common orientation to the human motives that surpass purely traditional economic considerations. We exemplify these correspondences with the similar explanations of the institutionalist Anne Mayhew and the communitarian political philosopher Michael Sandel to American farmer protests during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. We conclude by suggesting a possible common research agenda for institutionalists and communitarians regarding the moral limits of markets and civic consequences of economic arrangements.
