Paraoxonase-1 (PON1), a high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-associated enzyme, is involved in the metabolism and detoxification of insecticides and pesticides. The aims of this study were to evaluate the ...role of PON1 gene polymorphisms (-107CT, L55M, and Q192R) in patients susceptible to ischemic stroke and to determine the interactive relationship between PON1 gene polymorphisms and vascular risk factors regarding stroke occurrence. The PON1 polymorphisms were not significantly different between 471 stroke patients and 427 control subjects. When stratified by the size of the occluded vessel, the PON1 L55M polymorphism was associated with patients with small-vessel disease (LM + MM; AOR, 2.161; 1.204 - 3.880). In gene - environment or gene - nutrient interaction analysis, significant interactions associated with increased stroke risk were found. Of those significantinteractions, the PON1 55LM + MM genotype with a plasma folate level 3.57 ng/ml accelerated the stroke prevalence 5.793-fold (AOR, 5.793; 95 % CI 1.575'21.306). Our study suggested that genetic associations of PON1 with ischemic stroke were affected by pathophysiological and environmental factors. Further studies are needed to elucidate the interactions of PON1 with other stroke risk factors in large populations.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of persimmon-vinegar supplementation on blood lipid profiles, carnitine concentrations, and hepatic mRNA levels of enzymes involved in fatty acid ...metabolism. Thirty-two C57BL/6J male mice were divided into 4 groups; control group (HD), industrial vinegar group (HD-V), and persimmon-vinegar groups (HD-PV1, HD-PV2). Serum triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) concentrations significantly decreased in all vinegar-administered groups compared with the HD group. The hepatic TG and TC concentrations of persimmon-vinegar administered groups were significantly lower compared with the HD group. Liver acid insoluble acylcarnitine (AIAC) was significantly higher in the HD-PV2 than in HD and HD-V groups. The acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) mRNA level tended to lower in all the vinegar administered groups compared with the HD group. These results suggest that the persimmon-vinegar has anti-obesity properties.

Germination conditions were evaluated to obtain barley containing a high content of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and quality characteristics of saccharified materials manufactured using germinated ...barley were investigated. Water absorption content of barley increased but pH of the steeping solution decreased with increasing steeping time at all steeping temperatures. The changes in water absorption content and pH were highest at a steeping temperature of 25℃. The highest GABA content was obtained at a steeping condition of 25℃ for 20 h. The highest GABA content was obtained for a germination condition of 5℃ for 36 h after steeping, resulting in an increase of 7.4 times more GABA contents than that in raw material. The pH of saccarified materials decreased but titratable acidity, amino type nitrogen content, and ammonia type nitrogen content increased during the saccharification period. GABA content of saccarified materials increased with increasing saccharification period, resulting in the highest GABA content from saccarified materials containing germinated barley.
The aim of the present study was to assess the anti-obesity effects of fermented kochujang supplement in C57BL/6J mice. Thirty mice were divided into 3 groups; normal diet control group (ND), high ...fat diet control group (HD), and high fat diet plus kochujang supplemented group (HDK). Results were as follows: 1. Fermented kochujang supplement in high fat diet decreased body weight and epidydimal and back fat weight compared to non-supplement in HD group. 2. Lipid content and blood glucose level were lower in HDK group than HD group. 3. Fermented kochujang supplement increased mRNA level of lipolytic genes such as acyl-CoA synthetase (ACS), carnitine palmitoyltransferase-1 (CPT-1), and uncoupling protems-1 (UCP-1) expression, whereas decreased mRNA level of adipogenic genes such as acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC) expression. These findings suggest that fermented kochujang supplement in high fat diet normalized body weight, epididymal and back fat weight, lipid content, and blood glucose levels through controlling lipid metabolism and provides basic information on the control of obesity.
In order to induce high levels of protein secretion, we have constructed a recombinant plasmid, designated pBP244, into which was incorporated key components of the type-Ⅱ Sec-dependent secretion ...system, including LepB (signal peptidase), SecA (ATPase), and SecB (chaperone). The biological activities of the LepB, SecA, and SecB components expressed from genes harbored by pBP244 appeared to play their normal roles. In order to evaluate the protein secretion, a pspA (Streptococcus pneumoniae surface protein A) gene was cloned into pBP244, resulting in pBP438.

Fayoumi chicks were vaccinated with fowl pox virus vaccine and pigeon pox virus vaccine. The protective potentiality of the two vaccines was compared in field condition in Bangladesh. The percentage ...of 'take reaction' was assessed to conclude its relationship with better immune response and recorded 93.33% and 100% in birds of group B and group C, respectively. The mean passive hemagglutination (PHA) antibody titre after primary vaccination was 32±14.81 in group B and 33±13.66 in group C. Following booster vaccination, the mean PHA titres level at pre challenge of group B was 46.93±16.52 and 55.46±14.64 in group C. The PHA titre of group B and C at two weeks post challenge recorded 93.86±33.04 and 110.93±29.29, respectively. PHA titre significantly (P less than 0.01) increased after vaccination and post challenge compared to pre- vaccination titre. There was significant variation (P less than 0.01) of PHA titre at pre challenge in these groups using different vaccine combinations, but all the vaccinated birds resisted challenge infection.
The effect of the essential oil obtained from Chrysanthemum boreale Makino on the apoptosis of KB cells was investigated. Cytotoxicity and cellular DNA content were analyzed by MTT assay, flow ...cytometry, agarose gel electrophoresis, and Hoechst 33258 staining. The caspase-3 and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) proteins were estimated by Western blotting method. The various cytotoxic effects of the essential oil which are hallmarks of apoptosis, including DNA fragmentation, apoptotic body formation, and sub-G1 DNA content, all progressed in a dose-dependent manner.

The goal of this study was to investigate abnormalities in carnitine metabolism present by determining blood carnitine and lipid concentrations in Korean diabetic patients. The study subjects ...included 108 Korean diabetic patients (64 males and 44 females) who were hospitalized in Chonbuk National University Hospital and 27 subjects were also hospitalized as non-diabetic controls (10 males and 17 females). Glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG) and HDL-cholesterol in plasma were enzymatically assayed and insulin was measured by immunoradiometric assay.
