Based on an e+e− collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 567 pb−1 taken at the center-of-mass energy of s=4.6 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute ...branching fraction of the inclusive decay Λc+→Λ+X to be B(Λc+→Λ+X)=(38.2−2.2+2.8±0.9)% using the double-tag method, where X refers to any possible final state particles. In addition, we search for direct CP violation in the charge asymmetry of this inclusive decay for the first time, and obtain ACP≡B(Λc+→Λ+X)−B(Λ¯c−→Λ¯+X)/B(Λc+→Λ+X)+B(Λ¯c−→Λ¯+X)=(2.1−6.6+7.0±1.6)%, a statistically limited result with no evidence of CP violation.

Background: Atrial fibrillation is commonly associated with dilated pulmonary veins. Stretch has been shown to have mechano-electrical effects. Objective: To investigate whether stretch can increase ...the arrhythmogenic activity of the pulmonary veins. Methods: The transmembrane action potentials were recorded from rabbit pulmonary veins before and after stretch (100 and 300 mg). Gadolinium and streptomycin (stretch-activated ion channel blockers) were each perfused into the pulmonary veins under a 300-mg stretch. Results: Stretch (0, 100 and 300 mg) force dependently increased the incidence of spontaneous activity (22%, 48% and 83%; p<0.05), mean (standard deviation (SD)) firing rates of spontaneous activity (1.7 (0.2), 2.1 (0.3) and 3 (0.2) Hz; p<0.05) and incidence of early post-depolarisations (9%, 26% and 61%; p<0.05) and delayed post-depolarisations (0%, 4% and 30%; p<0.05) in 23 pulmonary veins. In the seven preparations with spontaneous activity after the 300-mg stretch, gadolinium (1, 3 and 10 μmol/l) decreased the incidence of spontaneous activity by 43%, 29% and 14%, respectively (p<0.05), and decreased the firing rate from 2.9 (0.1) Hz to 0.8 (0.4), 0.3 (0.1) and 0.1 (0.1) Hz, respectively (p<0.05). Streptomycin (10 and 40 μmol/l) decreased the incidence of spontaneous activity by 71% and 29%, respectively (p<0.05), and decreased the firing rate from 2.9 (0.1) Hz to 1.6 (0.4) and 0.5 (0.3) Hz, respectively (p<0.05). Conclusion: Stretch is an important factor in the electrical activity of the pulmonary vein. Stretch-induced arrhythmogenic activity of the pulmonary vein may contribute to the genesis of atrial fibrillation.
Tracking control of piezoelectric actuators (PEAs) has stimulated the development of various advanced control schemes that utilize the feedback of PEA system states for improved control performance. ...Among them, the one based on the concept of sliding mode has been shown promising due to its robustness to matched uncertainties, but leaving the required state estimation to be desired. Previous studies show that the PEA can be modeled as a linear dynamic system with matched uncertainties. On this basis, this paper presents the development of a novel observer based on the concept of proportional-integral-derivative-based (PID-based) sliding mode, in which the switching function is replaced by a PID regulator. The novel observer, referred to as the PID-based sliding mode observer (PIDSMO), relaxes the observer matching condition as required in the use of the unknown-input observers. The PIDSMO is then integrated with the PID-based sliding mode controller (PIDSMC) to form a novel integrated PID-based sliding mode observer-controller (PIDSMOC) for PEA tracking control. Experiments performed on a PEA showed that the PIDSMO can accurately estimate the PEA states and that the integrated PIDSMOC can achieve better tracking control performances as compared to the PIDSMC with α-β filter control scheme.

We investigate the quasiparticle dynamics in the prototypical heavy fermion CeCoIn5 using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our results indicate that this material system undergoes ...hybridization fluctuations before the establishment of heavy electron coherence, as the temperature decreases from ∼120 K (T†) to ∼55 K (T*). We reveal that the anomalous coherent phonon softening and damping reduction below T* are directly associated with the emergence of collective hybridization. We also discover a distinct collective mode with an energy of ∼8 meV, which may be experimental evidence of the predicted unconventional density wave. Our findings provide important information for understanding the hybridization dynamics in heavy fermion systems.

Flexible porous membranes have attracted increasing scientific interest due to their wide applications in flexible electronics, energy storage devices, sensors, and bioscaffolds. Here, inspired by ...nature, we develop a facile and scalable top-down approach for fabricating a superflexible, biocompatible, biodegradable three-dimensional (3D) porous membrane directly from natural wood (coded as flexible wood membrane) via a one-step chemical treatment. The superflexibility is attributed to both physical and chemical changes of the natural wood, particularly formation of the wavy structure formed by simple delignification induced by partial removal of lignin/hemicellulose. The flexible wood membrane, which inherits its unique 3D porous structure with aligned cellulose nanofibers, biodegradability, and biocompatibility from natural wood, combined with the superflexibility imparted by a simple chemical treatment, holds great potential for a range of applications. As an example, we demonstrate the application of the flexible, breathable wood membrane as a 3D bioscaffold for cell growth.
miR-30d has been observed to be significantly down-regulated in human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC), and is believed to be an important event in thyroid cell transformation. In this study, we ...found that miR-30d has a critical role in modulating sensitivity of ATC cells to cisplatin, a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug for treatment of this neoplasm. Using a mimic of miR-30d, we demonstrated that miR-30d could negatively regulate the expression of beclin 1, a key autophagy gene, leading to suppression of the cisplatin-activated autophagic response that protects ATC cells from apoptosis. A reporter gene assay demonstrated that the binding sequences of miR-30d in the beclin 1-3′ UTR was the region required for the inhibition of beclin 1 expression by this miRNA. We further showed that inhibition of the beclin 1-mediated autophagy by the miR-30d mimic sensitized ATC cells to cisplatin both in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (animal xenograft model). These results suggest that dysregulation of miR-30d in ATC cells is responsible for the insensitivity to cisplatin by promoting autophagic survival. Thus, miR-30d may be exploited as a potential target for therapeutic intervention in the treatment of ATC.
The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) is a resurgent pest of rice crops throughout Asia. We recently discovered that octopamine (OA) and OA2B2 operate in the BPH mating system, where ...it mediates a wide range of molecular, physiological and behavioural changes. Here, we report on outcomes of experiments designed to test the hypothesis that OA/OA2B2 signalling mediates responses to three abiotic stressors, starvation, high temperature (37 °C), and induced oxidative stress. We found per os RNAi‐mediated OA2B2 silencing led to significantly decreased survival, measured in days, following exposure to each of these stressors. We selected a biologically costly process, reproductive biology, as a biotic stressor. Silencing of OA2B2 led to decreased total protein content in ovaries and fat bodies, downregulated expression of vitellogenin (Vg) and Vg receptor (VgR), inhibited fat body Vg protein synthesis, shortened the oviposition period, prolonged the preoviposition period, reduced the number of laid eggs, body weight and female longevity. In addition, the silencing treatments also led to inhibited ovarian development, and ovarian Vg uptake, reduced numbers of egg masses and offspring and lower hatching rates and population growth index. These data support our hypothesis that OA2B2 acts in mediating BPH resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors.

The Ionospheric CONnections (ICON) mission has been continuously operating during the period from January 2020 to December 2021 providing simultaneous measurements of the thermal plasma properties ...near 600 km altitude and the neutral atmosphere and ionosphere in the altitude range 100 km to 500 km at low and middle latitudes. During this period of extremely low to moderately low solar activity, the evolving properties of the topside ionospheric density, composition, temperature and drift velocity at the satellite location are described using measurements from the Ion Velocity Meter (IVM). In the early months of 2020, the very low solar activity and relatively high abundance of H
+
in the total plasma density present a challenge to a robust description of the full local time distribution of the topside ion drifts. However, the quality of measurements of the ionospheric composition and temperature are not impacted by low solar activity conditions and changes in the O
+
and H
+
concentrations and their effects on the energy balance in the topside can be investigated as solar activity changes. As the relative abundance of O
+
increases, the susceptibility of the ion drift determination to the local plasma environment around the spacecraft is reduced and a more robust determination of the ion drift at all local times is possible. From October 2020 onward, the relationships between the topside ionospheric dynamics and the ionospheric density and temperature can be investigated and the relationships between the plasma drifts and the underlying neutral wind drivers can be established.
