Direct or indirect anthropogenic effects on ecosystem nitrogen cycles are important components of global change. Recent research has shown that N isotopes in tree rings reflect changes in ecosystem ...nitrogen sources or cycles and can be used to study past changes. We analyzed trends in two tree species from a remote and pristine tropical rainforest in Brazil, using trees of different ages to distinguish between the effect of tree age and long-term trends. Because sapwood differed from heartwood in δ15N and N concentration and N can be translocated between living sapwood cells, long-term trends are best seen in dead heartwood. Heartwood δ15N in Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata) and big-leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) increased with tree age, and N concentrations increased with age in Cedrela. Controlling for tree age, δ15N increased significantly during the past century even when analyzing only heartwood and after removing labile N compounds. In contrast to northern temperate and boreal forests where wood δ15N often decreased, the δ15N increase in a remote rainforest is unlikely to be a direct signal of changed N deposition. More plausibly, the change in N isotopic composition indicates a more open N cycle, i.e., higher N losses relative to internal N cycling in the forest, which could be the result of changed forest dynamics.
The aim of this study is to characterise the properties of juvenile and mature heartwood of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.). Content, composition and the subcellular distribution of heartwood ...extractives were studied in 14 old-growth trees from forest sites in Germany and Hungary as well as in 16 younger trees of four clone types. Heartwood extractives (methanol and acetone extraction) were analysed by HPLC-chromatography. UV microspectrophotometry was used to topochemically localise the extractives in the cell walls. The natural durability of the juvenile and mature heartwood was analysed according to the European standard EN 350-1. Growth as well as chemical analyses showed that, based on extractives content, the formation of juvenile wood in black locust is restricted to the first 10-20 years of cambial growth. In mature heartwood, high contents of phenolic compounds and flavonoids were present, localised in high concentrations in the cell walls and cell lumen of axial parenchyma and vessels. In juvenile wood, the content of these extractives is significantly lower. Juvenile wood had a correspondingly lower resistance to decay by Coniophora puteana (brown rot fungus) and Coriolus versicolor (white rot fungus) than mature heartwood.

ABSTRACT The increment zones width in the xylem of Swietenia macrophylla King was investigated by dendrochronological methods in an undisturbed and a strongly disturbed tropical site near Aripuanã, ...Mato Grosso, Brazil (10°09’ S, 59°26’W). The study aimed to assess the impact of forest disturbance on the relationship between precipitation and the cambial growth of this species. Tree-ring width chronologies were developed for both sites from cross-dated increment curves. Simple correlations were computed between monthly precipitation records and the annual increment of Swietenia for the period between 1870 and 2000. Logging activities and altered land use caused a significant decrease of the water supply of the Swietenia trees grown in the disturbed area compared to trees grown in the undisturbed area. Consequently, the precipitation of almost the total growing season had a significant influence on the tree ring width of Swietenia grown in the disturbed area, while in the undisturbed forest area the significant correlation between monthly precipitation and the tree ring width of Swietenia was restricted to the beginning of the growing season (November to January). However, the reconstruction of monthly precipitation data from the tree ring width records was more precise using the chronology developed from tree ring width records of undisturbed trees compared to the chronology developed from tree ring widths from the disturbed area. It was concluded that the use of the tree ring widths of Swietenia as climate proxies is restricted to certain months of the year and requires tree ring width chronologies developed from trees grown in undisturbed or only slightly disturbed forest areas without severe anthropogenic changes in microclimate.
In this study the compatibility for grafting of root stocks and buds of three recognized leaf phenotypes of Ilex paraguarensis St. (mate) Hil. from south Brazil was investigated. Special regard was ...given to the anatomical structure and the sap flow in the secondary xylem of the grafted plants. Significant differences of the wood structure expressed in terms of vessel portion, vessel member length, and intervessel perforations were found in low compatible phenotypes, while highly compatible phenotypes had a very similar wood structure. In grafts of highly compatible phenotypes six months after grafting the water conducting system of root stocks and buds was strongly linked to each other, while in grafts of low compatible phenotypes the formation of connecting vessel elements was rare. In the first month after grafting the xylem sap flow in the buds of all grafts was significantly higher compared to their root stocks, while in the second month in grafts of highly compatible phenotypes, the water transport in the root stocks and in the buds was balanced. In contrast, in grafts of low compatible phenotypes even in the second month the water transport in the root stocks was lower compared to the buds causing the dieback of a high portion of these plants.
ABSTRACTThis study aimed to investigate the influence of tree age on the assimilates partitioning and its significance for the formation of heartwood extractives in Robinia pseudoacacia L. (black ...locust). Assimilate translocation in 6- and 15-year-old plants was measured in May and August 2006 using the 14CO2 feeding method. The heartwood extractives content in the sapwood-heartwood transition zone and in individual tree rings of the pure heartwood were analysed by HPLC-chromatography. All plants, buds and young leaves showed the strongest 14C specific activity compared to other plant parts in May and August(14C specific activity in buds/leaves of 6-years old plants: 35.2-37.0%, 15-years old plants: 31.4-32.2%). However, in plants labelled in August 2006 at the sapwood-heartwood transition zone also showed a strong assimilates sink, while only small amounts of assimilates were translocated to the sapwood-heartwood transition zone in the plants labelled in May 2006. The amount of assimilates transported to the sapwood-heartwood transition zone was significantly higher in the 15-year-old plants compared to the 6-year-old plants. This was monitored by a higher content of extractives in the heartwood formed by the older plants compared to heartwood formed by the younger plants. The results indicate that uneven assimilate partitioning in younger and older black locust plants affects the heartwood extractives formation, which might lead to a lower natural durability of the heartwood formed by younger trees compared to heartwood formed by older trees.
RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a influência da idade da árvore na distribuição de assimilados e na formação de extrativos do cerne de Robinia pseudoacacia. A translocação de assimilados em plantas de 6 e 15 anos de idade foi mensurada em maio e em agosto de 2006, por meio do método do carbono 14. Os teores de extrativos na madeira da zona de transição entre o cerne e o alburno e em anéis de crescimento do cerne foram analisados por HPLC. Em maio e em agosto, em todas as plantas, os brotos e as folhas jovens tiveram a atividade específica do 14C mais forte, quando comparados com outras partes da planta (atividade específica de 14C em brotos/folhas de plantas de 6 anos de idade: 35,2-37,0%; plantas de 15 anos de idade: 31,4-32,2%). No entanto, em plantas analisadas em agosto de 2006, na zona de transição entre o cerne e o alburno, houve também um forte sequestro de assimilados, enquanto que, nas plantas analisadas em maio de 2006, apenas pequenas quantidades de assimilados foram translocadas. A quantidade de assimilados transportados para a zona de transição entre o cerne e o alburno, foi significativamente maior em plantas de 15 anos de idade, em comparação com as de 6 anos de idade. Isso foi acompanhado por um teor mais elevado de extrativos no cerne formado pelas plantas mais velhas em relação ao cerne da madeira formada pelas plantas jovens. Os resultados indicam que a distribuição desigual de assimilados em plantas de Robinia mais jovens e mais velhas afeta a formação de extrativos de cerne, o que pode levar a uma menor durabilidade natural do cerne formado por árvores mais jovens em relação ao cerne formado por árvores mais velhas.
The seasonal climate drivers of the carbon cycle in tropical forests remain poorly known, although these forests account for more carbon assimilation and storage than any other terrestrial ecosystem. ...Based on a unique combination of seasonal pan-tropical data sets from 89 experimental sites (68 include aboveground wood productivity measurements and 35 litter productivity measurements), their associated canopy photosynthetic capacity (enhanced vegetation index, EVI) and climate, we ask how carbon assimilation and aboveground allocation are related to climate seasonality in tropical forests and how they interact in the seasonal carbon cycle. We found that canopy photosynthetic capacity seasonality responds positively to precipitation when rainfall is < 2000 mm yr−1 (water-limited forests) and to radiation otherwise (light-limited forests). On the other hand, independent of climate limitations, wood productivity and litterfall are driven by seasonal variation in precipitation and evapotranspiration, respectively. Consequently, light-limited forests present an asynchronism between canopy photosynthetic capacity and wood productivity. First-order control by precipitation likely indicates a decrease in tropical forest productivity in a drier climate in water-limited forest, and in current light-limited forest with future rainfall < 2000 mm yr−1.
Gibberellins (GAs) are important regulators of shoot growth in trees. We studied the kinetics of xylem formation in hybrid poplar (Populus tremula L.×P. tremuloides Michx.) in which the key ...regulatory gene gibberellin acid 20 oxidase (GA20-oxidase) isolated from Arabidopsis is overexpressed. Increments in the height and radius of shoots were registered by high-resolution laser measurements. The anatomical and chemical structure of mature xylem cells was studied by light electron microscopy and UV spectrophotometry. Transgenic plants showed an increase in height growth, but a lower speed of cell elongation during primary growth compared to wild-type plants. During the first year of growth, transgenic plants showed a higher radius increment, an increase in the period of cell expansion of vessels and fibres and their final size, and a higher lignin content of the compound middle lamella between fibres compared to wild-type plants. In contrast, during the third year of growth, only a slight increase in the period of cell expansion of fibre cells was observed in transgenic compared to wild-type plants. Analyses of GA20-oxidase expression in leaves and shoots of 6-month- and 3-year-old plants of three different independent transgenic lines revealed a decrease in its expression only in shoots but not in leaves of the 3-year-old plants. The results indicate that overexpression of the GA20-oxidase gene in young shoots of transgenic poplar predominately affects cell expansion, while no GA20-oxidase expression was observed in shoots of 3-year-old transgenic plants, resulting in wild-type xylem cell development.
