The internet of things (IoT) aims to extend the internet to real-world objects, connecting smart and sensing devices into a global network infrastructure by connecting physical and virtual objects. ...The IoT has the potential to increase the quality of life of inhabitants and users of intelligent ambient assisted living (AAL) environments. The paper overviews and discusses the IoT technologies and their foreseen impacts and challenges for the AAL domain. The results of this review are summarized as the IoT based gerontechnology acceptance model for the assisted living domain. The model focuses on the acceptance of new technologies by older people and underscores the need for the adoption of the IoT for the AAL domain.
Breast cancer is a major research area in the medical image analysis field; it is a dangerous disease and a major cause of death among women. Early and accurate diagnosis of breast cancer based on ...digital mammograms can enhance disease detection accuracy. Medical imagery must be detected, segmented, and classified for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems to help the radiologists for accurate diagnosis of breast lesions. Therefore, an accurate breast cancer detection and classification approach is proposed for screening of mammograms. In this paper, we present a deep learning system that can identify breast cancer in mammogram screening images using an “end-to-end” training strategy that efficiently uses mammography images for computer-aided breast cancer recognition in the early stages. First, the proposed approach implements the modified contrast enhancement method in order to refine the detail of edges from the source mammogram images. Next, the transferable texture convolutional neural network (TTCNN) is presented to enhance the performance of classification and the energy layer is integrated in this work to extract the texture features from the convolutional layer. The proposed approach consists of only three layers of convolution and one energy layer, rather than the pooling layer. In the third stage, we analyzed the performance of TTCNN based on deep features of convolutional neural network models (InceptionResNet-V2, Inception-V3, VGG-16, VGG-19, GoogLeNet, ResNet-18, ResNet-50, and ResNet-101). The deep features are extracted by determining the best layers which enhance the classification accuracy. In the fourth stage, by using the convolutional sparse image decomposition approach, all the extracted feature vectors are fused and, finally, the best features are selected by using the entropy controlled firefly method. The proposed approach employed on DDSM, INbreast, and MIAS datasets and attained the average accuracy of 97.49%. Our proposed transferable texture CNN-based method for classifying screening mammograms has outperformed prior methods. These findings demonstrate that automatic deep learning algorithms can be easily trained to achieve high accuracy in diverse mammography images, and can offer great potential to improve clinical tools to minimize false positive and false negative screening mammography results.
In this article, we implement an action recognition technique based on features fusion and best feature selection. In the proposed method, HSI color transformation is performed in the first step to ...improve the contrast of video frames and then extract their motion features by optical flow algorithm. The frames fusion approach extracts the moving regions that find out by optical flow. After that, extract shape and texture features fused by a new parallel approach name length control features. A new Weighted Entropy-Variances approach is applied to a combined vector and selects the best of them for classification. Finally, features are passed in M-SVM for final features classification into relevant human actions. The experimental process is conducted in four famous action datasets- Weizmann, KTH, UCF Sports, and UCF YouTube, with recognition rate 97.9%, 100%, 99.3%, and 94.5%, respectively. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme performed significantly sound output concerning listed methods.

Manual diagnosis of skin cancer is time-consuming and expensive; therefore, it is essential to develop automated diagnostics methods with the ability to classify multiclass skin lesions with greater ...accuracy. We propose a fully automated approach for multiclass skin lesion segmentation and classification by using the most discriminant deep features. First, the input images are initially enhanced using local color-controlled histogram intensity values (LCcHIV). Next, saliency is estimated using a novel Deep Saliency Segmentation method, which uses a custom convolutional neural network (CNN) of ten layers. The generated heat map is converted into a binary image using a thresholding function. Next, the segmented color lesion images are used for feature extraction by a deep pre-trained CNN model. To avoid the curse of dimensionality, we implement an improved moth flame optimization (IMFO) algorithm to select the most discriminant features. The resultant features are fused using a multiset maximum correlation analysis (MMCA) and classified using the Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (KELM) classifier. The segmentation performance of the proposed methodology is analyzed on ISBI 2016, ISBI 2017, ISIC 2018, and PH2 datasets, achieving an accuracy of 95.38%, 95.79%, 92.69%, and 98.70%, respectively. The classification performance is evaluated on the HAM10000 dataset and achieved an accuracy of 90.67%. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed methods, we present a comparison with the state-of-the-art techniques.
A coal mine tunnel usually has a long-strip shape. Traditional single-sink cyber-physical-systems (CPS) cannot ensure that sensor nodes far from the entrance of a coal mine tunnel promptly and ...accurately transmit abnormal data from deep in the tunnel to the ground control center via the sink at the tunnel entrance. At the same time, it causes the “hot spot” problem easily around the Sink and limits the lifetime of the whole network. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a Multi-sink distributed power control algorithm (MSDPC-SRMS) suitable for a coal mine tunnel. This algorithm uses the Multiple Sink network structure and the idea of non-uniform cluster, combines the Multi-sink network with the clustering Voronoi scoping routing algorithm. It allocates the optimal transmission range and power for each sink, uses each sink as the cluster head and the network clustering is performed. The network topology is optimized on the basis of a good network coverage rate. Simulation results compared with CNP strategy show that the new algorithm exhibits superior connectivity, power consumption validity, clustering interference, and network performance, can effectively reduce the overall power consumption and prolong the lifetime of the network, thus ensure the monitoring data transmitted to the monitoring center rapidly and quickly.
Manual identification of brain tumors is an error-prone and tedious process for radiologists; therefore, it is crucial to adopt an automated system. The binary classification process, such as ...malignant or benign is relatively trivial; whereas, the multimodal brain tumors classification (T1, T2, T1CE, and Flair) is a challenging task for radiologists. Here, we present an automated multimodal classification method using deep learning for brain tumor type classification. The proposed method consists of five core steps. In the first step, the linear contrast stretching is employed using edge-based histogram equalization and discrete cosine transform (DCT). In the second step, deep learning feature extraction is performed. By utilizing transfer learning, two pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) models, namely VGG16 and VGG19, were used for feature extraction. In the third step, a correntropy-based joint learning approach was implemented along with the extreme learning machine (ELM) for the selection of best features. In the fourth step, the partial least square (PLS)-based robust covariant features were fused in one matrix. The combined matrix was fed to ELM for final classification. The proposed method was validated on the BraTS datasets and an accuracy of 97.8%, 96.9%, 92.5% for BraTs2015, BraTs2017, and BraTs2018, respectively, was achieved.
In healthcare, a multitude of data is collected from medical sensors and devices, such as X-ray machines, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography (CT), and so on, that can be analyzed by ...artificial intelligence methods for early diagnosis of diseases. Recently, the outbreak of the COVID-19 disease caused many deaths. Computer vision researchers support medical doctors by employing deep learning techniques on medical images to diagnose COVID-19 patients. Various methods were proposed for COVID-19 case classification. A new automated technique is proposed using parallel fusion and optimization of deep learning models. The proposed technique starts with a contrast enhancement using a combination of top-hat and Wiener filters. Two pre-trained deep learning models (AlexNet and VGG16) are employed and fine-tuned according to target classes (COVID-19 and healthy). Features are extracted and fused using a parallel fusion approach-parallel positive correlation. Optimal features are selected using the entropy-controlled firefly optimization method. The selected features are classified using machine learning classifiers such as multiclass support vector machine (MC-SVM). Experiments were carried out using the Radiopaedia database and achieved an accuracy of 98%. Moreover, a detailed analysis is conducted and shows the improved performance of the proposed scheme.
Plant diseases can cause a considerable reduction in the quality and number of agricultural products. Guava, well known to be the tropics’ apple, is one significant fruit cultivated in tropical ...regions. It is attacked by 177 pathogens, including 167 fungal and others such as bacterial, algal, and nematodes. In addition, postharvest diseases may cause crucial production loss. Due to minor variations in various guava disease symptoms, an expert opinion is required for disease analysis. Improper diagnosis may cause economic losses to farmers’ improper use of pesticides. Automatic detection of diseases in plants once they emerge on the plants’ leaves and fruit is required to maintain high crop fields. In this paper, an artificial intelligence (AI) driven framework is presented to detect and classify the most common guava plant diseases. The proposed framework employs the ΔE color difference image segmentation to segregate the areas infected by the disease. Furthermore, color (RGB, HSV) histogram and textural (LBP) features are applied to extract rich, informative feature vectors. The combination of color and textural features are used to identify and attain similar outcomes compared to individual channels, while disease recognition is performed by employing advanced machine-learning classifiers (Fine KNN, Complex Tree, Boosted Tree, Bagged Tree, Cubic SVM). The proposed framework is evaluated on a high-resolution (18 MP) image dataset of guava leaves and fruit. The best recognition results were obtained by Bagged Tree classifier on a set of RGB, HSV, and LBP features (99% accuracy in recognizing four guava fruit diseases (Canker, Mummification, Dot, and Rust) against healthy fruit). The proposed framework may help the farmers to avoid possible production loss by taking early precautions.
Pneumonia is among the top diseases which cause most of the deaths all over the world. Virus, bacteria and fungi can all cause pneumonia. However, it is difficult to judge the pneumonia just by ...looking at chest X-rays. The aim of this study is to simplify the pneumonia detection process for experts as well as for novices. We suggest a novel deep learning framework for the detection of pneumonia using the concept of transfer learning. In this approach, features from images are extracted using different neural network models pretrained on ImageNet, which then are fed into a classifier for prediction. We prepared five different models and analyzed their performance. Thereafter, we proposed an ensemble model that combines outputs from all pretrained models, which outperformed individual models, reaching the state-of-the-art performance in pneumonia recognition. Our ensemble model reached an accuracy of 96.4% with a recall of 99.62% on unseen data from the Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center dataset.
After lung cancer, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women. If breast cancer is detected early, mortality rates in women can be reduced. Because manual breast cancer diagnosis ...takes a long time, an automated system is required for early cancer detection. This paper proposes a new framework for breast cancer classification from ultrasound images that employs deep learning and the fusion of the best selected features. The proposed framework is divided into five major steps: (i) data augmentation is performed to increase the size of the original dataset for better learning of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models; (ii) a pre-trained DarkNet-53 model is considered and the output layer is modified based on the augmented dataset classes; (iii) the modified model is trained using transfer learning and features are extracted from the global average pooling layer; (iv) the best features are selected using two improved optimization algorithms known as reformed differential evaluation (RDE) and reformed gray wolf (RGW); and (v) the best selected features are fused using a new probability-based serial approach and classified using machine learning algorithms. The experiment was conducted on an augmented Breast Ultrasound Images (BUSI) dataset, and the best accuracy was 99.1%. When compared with recent techniques, the proposed framework outperforms them.
