The role of autotransplantation in end-stage hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is unclear. We aimed to present our 15-case experience and propose selection criteria for autotransplantation. All ...patients were considered to have unresectable hepatic AE by conventional resection due to critical invasion to retrohepatic vena cava, hepatocaval region along with three hepatic veins, and the tertiary portal and arterial branches. All patients successfully underwent ex vivo extended right hepatectomy and autotransplantation without intraoperative mortality. The median autograft weight was 706 g (380–1000 g); operative time was 15.5 hours (11.5–20.5 hours); and anhepatic time was 283.8 minutes (180–435 min). Postoperative hospital stay was 32.3 days (12–60 days). Postoperative complication Clavien–Dindo grade IIIa or higher occurred in three patients including one death that occurred 12 days after the surgery due to acute liver failure. One patient was lost to follow-up after the sixth month. Thirteen patients were followed for a median of 21.6 months with no relapse. This is the largest reported series of patients with end-stage hepatic AE treated with liver autotransplantation. The technique requires neither organ donor nor postoperative immunosuppressant. The early postoperative mortality was low with acceptable morbidity. Preoperative precise assessment and strict patient selection are of utmost importance.
The amyloid-β protein (Aβ) protein plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is believed that Aβ deposited in the brain originates from the brain tissue itself. ...However, Aβ is generated in both brain and peripheral tissues. Whether circulating Aβ contributes to brain AD-type pathologies remains largely unknown. In this study, using a model of parabiosis between APPswe/PS1dE9 transgenic AD mice and their wild-type littermates, we observed that the human Aβ originated from transgenic AD model mice entered the circulation and accumulated in the brains of wild-type mice, and formed cerebral amyloid angiopathy and Aβ plaques after a 12-month period of parabiosis. AD-type pathologies related to the Aβ accumulation including tau hyperphosphorylation, neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation and microhemorrhage were found in the brains of the parabiotic wild-type mice. More importantly, hippocampal CA1 long-term potentiation was markedly impaired in parabiotic wild-type mice. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to reveal that blood-derived Aβ can enter the brain, form the Aβ-related pathologies and induce functional deficits of neurons. Our study provides novel insight into AD pathogenesis and provides evidence that supports the development of therapies for AD by targeting Aβ metabolism in both the brain and the periphery.
The coloration of some butterflies, Pachyrhynchus weevils, and many chameleons are notable examples of natural organisms employing photonic crystals to produce colorful patterns. Despite advances in ...nanotechnology, we still lack the ability to print arbitrary colors and shapes in all three dimensions at this microscopic length scale. Here, we introduce a heat-shrinking method to produce 3D-printed photonic crystals with a 5x reduction in lattice constants, achieving sub-100-nm features with a full range of colors. With these lattice structures as 3D color volumetric elements, we printed 3D microscopic scale objects, including the first multi-color microscopic model of the Eiffel Tower measuring only 39 µm tall with a color pixel size of 1.45 µm. The technology to print 3D structures in color at the microscopic scale promises the direct patterning and integration of spectrally selective devices, such as photonic crystal-based color filters, onto free-form optical elements and curved surfaces.
Fully recrystallized CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloys (HEAs) with different grain sizes ranging from 503nm to 88.9µm were fabricated by cold rolling and controlled annealing. Tensile tests were ...conducted at ambient temperature, and deformation microstructures were investigated using electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. It is found that strain-hardening curves changed dramatically with grain refinement. Deformation twinning prevails when the grain size is coarse, but it is absent when the grain size falls in the ultrafine-grained (UFG) regime. The transition of twinning behavior is supposed to be determined by the increased twinning stress with grain refinement. It is indicated that the twinning behavior of the HEAs is strongly dependent on the competition between the flow stress and critical twinning stress with grain refinement.

(SPPs): hybrid quasiparticles of infrared photons and electrons in graphene. The drag is visualized directly through infrared nano-imaging of propagating plasmonic waves in the presence of a high-density current. The polaritons in graphene shorten their wavelength when propagating against the drifting carriers. Unlike the Fizeau effect for light, the SPP drag by electrical currents defies explanation by simple kinematics and is linked to the nonlinear electrodynamics of Dirac electrons in graphene. The observed plasmonic Fizeau drag enables breaking of time-reversal symmetry and reciprocity
at infrared frequencies without resorting to magnetic fields
or chiral optical pumping
. The Fizeau drag also provides a tool with which to study interactions and nonequilibrium effects in electron liquids.
Additively manufactured (AM) biodegradable porous zinc exhibits great potential as a promising bone-substituting biomaterial. However, there is no information whatsoever available regarding its ...corrosion fatigue behavior. In this study, we used direct metal printing to fabricate topologically ordered biodegradable porous zinc based on a diamond unit cell. We compared the compression-compression fatigue behavior of AM porous zinc in air and in revised simulated body fluid (r-SBF). The fatigue strength of AM porous zinc was high in air (i.e., 70% of its yield strength) and even higher in r-SBF (i.e., 80% of its yield strength). The high value of the relative fatigue strength in air could be attributed to the good ductility of pure zinc itself. The formation of corrosion products around the strut junctions might explain the higher fatigue strength of AM zinc in r-SBF. Furthermore, we compared the fatigue behavior of a uniform design of the AM porous zinc with a functionally graded design. The functionally graded structure exhibited higher relative fatigue strengths than the uniform structure. The inspection of the fatigue crack distribution revealed that the functionally graded design controlled the sequence of crack initiation, which occurred early in the thicker struts and moved towards the thinner struts over time. The theoretical fatigue life models suggest that optimizing the functionally graded structure could be used as an effective means to improve the fatigue life of AM porous zinc. In conclusion, the favorable fatigue behavior of AM porous zinc further highlights its potential as a promising bone-substituting biomaterial.

have been championed to fabricate lightweight and flexible units for next-generation displays and ...active lighting. Although there are already some high-end commercial products based on OLEDs, costs must decrease whilst maintaining high operational efficiencies for the technology to realise wider impact. Here we demonstrate efficient action of radical-based OLEDs
, whose emission originates from a spin doublet, rather than a singlet or triplet exciton. While the emission process is still spin-allowed in these OLEDs, the efficiency limitations imposed by triplet excitons are circumvented for doublets. Using a luminescent radical emitter, we demonstrate an OLED with maximum external quantum efficiency of 27 per cent at a wavelength of 710 nanometres-the highest reported value for deep-red and infrared LEDs. For a standard closed-shell organic semiconductor, holes and electrons occupy the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs and LUMOs), respectively, and recombine to form singlet or triplet excitons. Radical emitters have a singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) in the ground state, giving an overall spin-1/2 doublet. If-as expected on energetic grounds-both electrons and holes occupy this SOMO level, recombination returns the system to the ground state, giving no light emission. However, in our very efficient OLEDs, we achieve selective hole injection into the HOMO and electron injection to the SOMO to form the fluorescent doublet excited state with near-unity internal quantum efficiency.
Using the electrospinning technique, we have prepared lithium perchlorate (LiClO
4) doped-polyethylene oxide (PEO) electrospun nanofibers for humidity sensing and camphosulfonic acid (HCSA) ...doped-polyaniline (PANI)/polystyrene (PS) electrospun nanofibers for sensing hydrogen peroxide (H
2O
2) and glucose. The diameters of these as-prepared polymeric nanofibers are in the range of 400–1000
nm. Owing to the large surface area and good electrical properties intrinsically associated with these nanoscale functional polymer fibers, we achieved significantly enhanced sensitivity for the nanofiber sensors in respect to their corresponding film-type counterparts. While scanning electron micrographs showed some distortions for the LiClO
4 doped-PEO nanofibers after the humidity measurements, no observable morphological change was seen for the HCSA doped-PANI/PS nanofiber sensors after the measurements of H
2O
2 and/or glucose.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is expressed in the epithelial cells of a wide range of organs/tissues from which most cancers are derived. Although accumulating ...reports have indicated the association of cancer incidence with genetic variations in CFTR gene, the exact role of CFTR in cancer development and the possible underlying mechanism have not been elucidated. Here, we report that CFTR expression is significantly decreased in both prostate cancer cell lines and human prostate cancer tissue samples. Overexpression of CFTR in prostate cancer cell lines suppresses tumor progression (cell growth, adhesion and migration), whereas knockdown of CFTR leads to enhanced malignancies both in vitro and in vivo. In addition, we demonstrate that CFTR knockdown-enhanced cell proliferation, cell invasion and migration are significantly reversed by antibodies against either urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) or uPA receptor (uPAR), which are known to be involved in various malignant traits of cancer development. More interestingly, overexpression of CFTR suppresses uPA by upregulating the recently described tumor suppressor microRNA-193b (miR-193b), and overexpression of pre-miR-193b significantly reverses CFTR knockdown-enhanced malignant phenotype and abrogates elevated uPA activity in prostate cancer cell line. Finally, we show that CFTR gene transfer results in significant tumor repression in prostate cancer xenografts in vivo. Taken together, the present study has demonstrated a previously undefined tumor-suppressing role of CFTR and its involvement in regulation of miR-193b in prostate cancer development.
