Crustal recycling at convergent plate boundaries is essential to mantle heterogeneity. However, crustal signatures in the mantle source of basaltic rocks above subduction zones were primarily ...incorporated in the form of liquid rather than solid phases. The physicochemical property of liquid phases is determined by the dehydration behavior of crustal rocks at the slab-mantle interface in subduction channels. Because of the significant fractionation in incompatible trace elements but the full inheritance in radiogenic isotopes relative to their crustal sources, the production of liquid phases is crucial to the geochemical transfer from the subducting crust into the mantle. In this process, the stability of specific minerals in subducting crustal rocks exerts a primary control on the enrichment of given trace elements in the liquid phases. For this reason, geochemically enriched oceanic basalts can be categorized into two types in terms of their trace element distribution patterns in the primitive mantle-normalized diagram. One is island arc basalts (IAB), showing enrichment in LILE, Pb and LREE but depletion in HFSE such as Nb and Ta relative to HREE. The other is ocean island basalts (OIB), exhibiting enrichment in LILE and LREE, enrichment or non-depletion in HFSE but depletion in Pb relative to HREE. In either types, these basalts show the enhanced enrichment of LILE and LREE with increasing their incompatibility relative to normal mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB).
The thermal regime of subduction zones can be categorized into two stages in both time and space. The first stage is characterized by compressional tectonism at low thermal gradients. As a consequence, metamorphic dehydration of the subducting crust prevails at forearc to subarc depths due to the breakdown of hydrous minerals such as mica and amphibole in the stability field of garnet and rutile, resulting in the liberation of aqueous solutions with the trace element composition that is considerably enriched in LILE, Pb and LREE but depleted in HFSE and HREE relative to normal MORB. This provides the crustal signature for the mantle sources of IAB. The second stage is indicated by extensional tectonism at high thermal gradients, leading to the partial melting of metamorphically dehydrated crustal rocks at subarc to postarc depths. This involves not only the breakdown of hydrous minerals such as amphibole, phengite and allanite in the stability field of garnet but also the dissolution of rutile into hydrous melts. As such, the hydrous melts can acquire the trace element composition that is significantly enriched in LILE, HFSE and LREE but depleted in Pb and HREE relative to normal MORB, providing the crustal signature for the mantle sources of OIB. In either case, these liquid phases would metasomatize the overlying mantle wedge peridotite at different depths, generating ultramafic metasomatites such as serpentinized and chloritized peridotites, and olivine-poor pyroxenites and hornblendites. As a consequence, the crustal signatures are transferred by the liquid phases from the subducting slab into the mantle.

Chemical geodynamics is an integrated discipline that studies the geochemical structure and tectonic evolution of geospheres with the aim of linking tectonic processes to geochemical products in the ...Earth system. It was primarily focused on mantle geochemistry, with an emphasis on geochemical recycling in oceanic subduction zones. It has been extended to geochemical reworking and recycling under high-pressure (HP) to ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) conditions in all convergent plate margins. In particular, UHP terranes, along with UHP metamorphic minerals and rocks in continental subduction zones, represent natural laboratories for investigating geochemical transport and fluid action during subduction and exhumation of continental crust. As a result of this extension, the study of UHP terranes has significantly advanced our understanding of tectonic processes in collisional orogens. This understanding has principally benefited from the deciphering of petrological and geochemical records in deeply subducted crustal rocks that occur in different petrotectonic settings. This review focuses on the following issues in continental subduction zones: the time and duration of UHP metamorphism, the origin and action of metamorphic fluid/melt inside UHP slices, the element and isotope mobilities under HP to UHP conditions during continental collision, the origin of premetamorphic protoliths and its bearing on continental collision types, and the crustal detachment and crust–mantle interaction in subduction channels. The synthesis presented herein suggests that the nature of premetamorphic protoliths is a key to the type of collisional orogens and the size of UHP terranes. The source mixing in subduction channels is a basic mechanism responsible for the geochemical diversity of continental and oceanic basaltic rocks. Therefore, the geochemical study of HP to UHP metamorphic rocks and their derivatives has greatly facilitated our understanding of the geodynamic processes that drive the tectonic evolution of convergent plate margins from oceanic subduction to continental collision. Consequently, the study of chemical geodynamics has been developed from oceanic subduction zones to continental collision zones, and it has enabled important contributions to development of plate tectonic theory.

Without external chiral intervention, it is a challenge to form homochirality from achiral molecules with conformational flexibility. We here report on a rational strategy that uses multivalent ...noncovalent interactions to clamp the molecular conformations of achiral D‐A molecules. These interactions overcome the otherwise dominant dipole‐dipole interactions and thus disfavor their symmetric antiparallel stacking. It in turn facilitates parallel packing, leading to spontaneous symmetry breaking during crystallization and thus the formation of homochiral conglomerates. When this emergent homochirality is coupled with optical gain characteristics of the molecules, the homochiral crystals are explored as excellent circularly polarized micro‐lasers with low lasing threshold (16.4 μJ cm−2) and high dissymmetry factor glum (0.9). This study therefore provides a facile design strategy for supramolecular chiral materials and active laser ones without the necessity of intrinsic chiral element.

An overview is presented for the formation and evolution of Precambrian continental lithosphere in South China. This is primarily based on an integrated study of zircon U–Pb ages and Lu–Hf isotopes ...in crustal rocks, with additional constraints from Re–Os isotopes in mantle-derived rocks. Available Re–Os isotope data on xenolith peridotites suggest that the oldest subcontinental lithospheric mantle beneath South China is primarily of Paleoproterozoic age. The zircon U–Pb ages and Lu–Hf isotope studies reveal growth and reworking of the juvenile crust at different ages. Both the Yangtze and Cathaysia terranes contain crustal materials of Archean U–Pb ages. Nevertheless, zircon U–Pb ages exhibit two peaks at 2.9–3.0Ga and ~2.5Ga in Yangtze but only one peak at ~2.5Ga in Cathaysia. Both massive rocks and crustal remnants (i.e., zircon) of Archean U–Pb ages occur in Yangtze, but only crustal remnants of Archean U–Pb ages occur in Cathaysia. Zircon U–Pb and Lu–Hf isotopes in the Kongling complex of Yangtze suggest the earliest episode of crustal growth in the Paleoarchean and two episodes of crustal reworking at 3.1–3.3Ga and 2.8–3.0Ga. Both negative and positive εHf(t) values are associated with Archean U–Pb ages of zircon in South China, indicating both the growth of juvenile crust and the reworking of ancient crust in the Archean. Paleoproterozoic rocks in Yangtze exhibit four groups of U–Pb ages at 2.1Ga, 1.9–2.0Ga, ~1.85Ga and ~1.7Ga, respectively. They are associated not only with reworking of the ancient Archean crust in the interior of Yangtze, but also with the growth of the contemporaneous juvenile crust in the periphery of Yangtze. In contrast, Paleoproterozoic rocks in Cathaysia were primarily derived from reworking of Archean crust at 1.8–1.9Ga. The exposure of Mesoproterozoic rocks are very limited in South China, but zircon Hf model ages suggest the growth of juvenile crust in this period due to island arc magmatism of the Grenvillian oceanic subduction. Magmatic rocks of middle Neoproterozoic U–Pb ages are widespread in South China, exhibiting two peaks at about 830–800Ma and 780–740Ma, respectively. Both negative and positive εHf(t) values are associated with the middle Neoproterozoic U–Pb ages of zircon, suggesting not only growth and reworking of the juvenile Mesoproterozoic crust but also reworking of the ancient Archean and Paleoproterozoic crust in the middle Neoproterozoic. The tectonic setting for this period of magmatism would be transformed from arc–continent collision to continental rifting with reference to the plate tectonic regime in South China.

Healthy human skin sustains an effective immune defense mechanism, formed by a complex physical and chemical epidermal barrier that coordinates with different cellular components of the skin immune ...system. However, the mechanism by which skin cells regulate local immune homeostasis in health and disease contexts is not well known. To investigate whether exosomes exist in sweat, sweat samples from healthy individuals were collected after aerobic exercise. Sweat exosome was isolated via differential ultracentrifugation, observed under transmission electron microscopy, measured by dynamic light scattering, and confirmed by immunoblot. Further, shotgun liquid chromatography (LC)-mass spectrometry (MS)/MS analysis was conducted to investigate the proteomic profiling of sweat exosome. Secreted exosome was detected in human sweat. A total of 1,062 proteins were identified in sweat exosome, including 997 different proteins compared with sweat proteomics and 896 unique proteins compared with urine, saliva, and plasma exosomes. Diverse antimicrobial peptides and immunological factors were found in sweat exosome, suggesting the involvement of exosome in skin immunity. This study provides direct evidence that secreted exosomes exist in human sweat. The proteomic profiling of sweat exosome provides insight into sweat features and the potential physiological significance of exosomes in immune homeostasis.
We herein present an approach of photo‐induced disproportionation for preparation of Type‐I photodynamic agents. As a proof of concept, BODIPY‐based photosensitizers were rationally designed and ...prepared. The photo‐induced intermolecular electron transfer between homotypic chromophores leads to the disproportionation reaction, resulting in the formation of charged intermediates, cationic and anionic radicals. The cationic radicals efficiently oxidize the cellularimportant coenzyme, tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), and the anionic radicals transfer electrons to oxygen to produce superoxide radicals (O2−⋅). One of our Type‐I photodynamic agents not only self‐assembles in water but also effectively targets the endoplasmic reticulum. It displayed excellent photocytotoxicity even in highly hypoxic environments (2 % O2), with a half‐maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.96 μM, and demonstrated outstanding antitumor efficacy in murine models bearing HeLa tumors.

The formation of collisional orogens is a prominent feature in convergent plate margins. It is generally a complex process involving multistage tectonism of compression and extension due to ...continental subduction and collision. The Paleozoic convergence between the South China Block (SCB) and the North China Block (NCB) is associated with a series of tectonic processes such as oceanic subduction, terrane accretion and continental collision, resulting in the Qinling–Tongbai–Hong'an–Dabie–Sulu orogenic belt. While the arc–continent collision orogeny is significant during the Paleozoic in the Qinling–Tongbai–Hong'an orogens of central China, the continent–continent collision orogeny is prominent during the early Mesozoic in the Dabie–Sulu orogens of east-central China. This article presents an overview of regional geology, geochronology and geochemistry for the composite orogenic belt. The Qinling–Tongbai–Hong'an orogens exhibit the early Paleozoic HP–UHP metamorphism, the Carboniferous HP metamorphism and the Paleozoic arc-type magmatism, but the three tectonothermal events are absent in the Dabie–Sulu orogens. The Triassic UHP metamorphism is prominent in the Dabie–Sulu orogens, but it is absent in the Qinling–Tongbai orogens. The Hong'an orogen records both the HP and UHP metamorphism of Triassic age, and collided continental margins contain both the juvenile and ancient crustal rocks. So do in the Qinling and Tongbai orogens. In contrast, only ancient crustal rocks were involved in the UHP metamorphism in the Dabie–Sulu orogenic belt, without involvement of the juvenile arc crust. On the other hand, the deformed and low-grade metamorphosed accretionary wedge was developed on the passive continental margin during subduction in the late Permian to early Triassic along the northern margin of the Dabie–Sulu orogenic belt, and it was developed on the passive oceanic margin during subduction in the early Paleozoic along the northern margin of the Qinling orogen.
Three episodes of arc–continent collision are suggested to occur during the Paleozoic continental convergence between the SCB and NCB. The first episode of arc–continent collision is caused by northward subduction of the North Qinling unit beneath the Erlangping unit, resulting in UHP metamorphism at ca. 480–490Ma and the accretion of the North Qinling unit to the NCB. The second episode of arc–continent collision is caused by northward subduction of the Prototethyan oceanic crust beneath an Andes-type continental arc, leading to granulite-facies metamorphism at ca. 420–430Ma and the accretion of the Shangdan arc terrane to the NCB and reworking of the North Qinling, Erlangping and Kuanping units. The third episode of arc–continent collision is caused by northward subduction of the Paleotethyan oceanic crust, resulting in the HP eclogite-facies metamorphism at ca. 310Ma in the Hong'an orogen and low-P metamorphism in the Qinling–Tongbai orogens as well as crustal accretion to the NCB. The closure of backarc basins is also associated with the arc–continent collision processes, with the possible cause for granulite-facies metamorphism. The massive continental subduction of the SCB beneath the NCB took place in the Triassic with the final continent–continent collision and UHP metamorphism at ca. 225–240Ma. Therefore, the Qinling–Tongbai–Hong'an–Dabie–Sulu orogenic belt records the development of plate tectonics from oceanic subduction and arc-type magmatism to arc–continent and continent–continent collision.

The 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak is a major challenge for public health. SARS-CoV-2 infection in human has a broad clinical spectrum ranging from mild to severe cases, with a ...mortality rate of ~6.4% worldwide (based on World Health Organization daily situation report). However, the dynamics of viral infection, replication and shedding are poorly understood. Here, we show that Rhesus macaques are susceptible to the infection by SARS-CoV-2. After intratracheal inoculation, the first peak of viral RNA was observed in oropharyngeal swabs one day post infection (1 d.p.i.), mainly from the input of the inoculation, while the second peak occurred at 5 d.p.i., which reflected on-site replication in the respiratory tract. Histopathological observation shows that SARS-CoV-2 infection can cause interstitial pneumonia in animals, characterized by hyperemia and edema, and infiltration of monocytes and lymphocytes in alveoli. We also identified SARS-CoV-2 RNA in respiratory tract tissues, including trachea, bronchus and lung; and viruses were also re-isolated from oropharyngeal swabs, bronchus and lung, respectively. Furthermore, we demonstrated that neutralizing antibodies generated from the primary infection could protect the Rhesus macaques from a second-round challenge by SARS-CoV-2. The non-human primate model that we established here provides a valuable platform to study SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis and to evaluate candidate vaccines and therapeutics.

Z-scheme heterojunction can not only promote the separation of photogenerated carriers, but also retain the strong redox potential of the system, which would greatly improve the photocatalytic performance of catalyst. Herein, a Z-scheme AgI/Bi4V2O11 heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared by a hydrothermal process combined with in situ coprecipitation process. Multiple techniques were employed to investigate the morphology, composition, chemical and electronic properties of the as-prepared samples. The obtained Z-scheme AgI/Bi4V2O11 heterojunction photocatalyst exhibited remarkably enhanced photocatalytic performance towards sulfamethazine (SMZ) degradation under visible light irradiation. Especially, the 20 wt% AgI/Bi4V2O11 composites exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for sulfamethazine (SMZ) degradation and 91.47% SMZ would be eliminated within 60 min. In comparison with NO3− and SO42−, the presence of Cl− and HCO3− presented more obviously inhibition effects on SMZ degradation. The possible degradation pathways of SMZ were speculated by identifying degradation intermediates. O2−, h+ and OH all involved in the photocatalytic degradation SMZ. The highly enhanced photocatalytic performance might be attributed to form Z-scheme junction between AgI and BVO, which are conducive to the efficient charges separation and maintain high redox potential. This work enriches Bi4V2O11-based Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic system and provides a reference for the preparation of effective Z-scheme junction photocatalysts.
