Framed within the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) of the European Commission, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is producing an enhanced global dataset for the ...land component of the fifth generation of European ReAnalysis (ERA5), hereafter referred to as ERA5-Land. Once completed, the period covered will span from 1950 to the present, with continuous updates to support land monitoring applications. ERA5-Land describes the evolution of the water and energy cycles over land in a consistent manner over the production period, which, among others, could be used to analyse trends and anomalies. This is achieved through global high-resolution numerical integrations of the ECMWF land surface model driven by the downscaled meteorological forcing from the ERA5 climate reanalysis, including an elevation correction for the thermodynamic near-surface state. ERA5-Land shares with ERA5 most of the parameterizations that guarantees the use of the state-of-the-art land surface modelling applied to numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. A main advantage of ERA5-Land compared to ERA5 and the older ERA-Interim is the horizontal resolution, which is enhanced globally to 9 km compared to 31 km (ERA5) or 80 km (ERA-Interim), whereas the temporal resolution is hourly as in ERA5. Evaluation against independent in situ observations and global model or satellite-based reference datasets shows the added value of ERA5-Land in the description of the hydrological cycle, in particular with enhanced soil moisture and lake description, and an overall better agreement of river discharge estimations with available observations. However, ERA5-Land snow depth fields present a mixed performance when compared to those of ERA5, depending on geographical location and altitude. The description of the energy cycle shows comparable results with ERA5. Nevertheless, ERA5-Land reduces the global averaged root mean square error of the skin temperature, taking as reference MODIS data, mainly due to the contribution of coastal points where spatial resolution is important. Since January 2020, the ERA5-Land period available has extended from January 1981 to the near present, with a 2- to 3-month delay with respect to real time. The segment prior to 1981 is in production, aiming for a release of the whole dataset in summer/autumn 2021. The high spatial and temporal resolution of ERA5-Land, its extended period, and the consistency of the fields produced makes it a valuable dataset to support hydrological studies, to initialize NWP and climate models, and to support diverse applications dealing with water resource, land, and environmental management.

An extensive numerical investigation of the heat transport enhancement achieved by the thermocapillary effect during the melting of Phase Change Materials in microgravity is presented. The phase change transition is analysed for the high Prandtl number paraffin n-octadecane in a two-dimensional rectangular container subjected to isothermal conditions along the lateral boundaries. The thermocapillary effect, supported by a free surface created as the solid/liquid front progresses, acts driving convection and as an effective mechanism for heat transport. For reference, the melting is first analysed under purely diffusive transport (conduction) and the heat transfer rate is shown to depend only on the Stefan number. Thermocapillary effects are then examined in the limiting cases of large and short containers. Results are presented for the representative aspect ratios Γ=12,2.25, where the thermocapillary flow is characterised by the appearance of oscillatory convection through the hydrothermal travelling wave and oscillatory standing wave modes, respectively, at a critical Marangoni number (Ma). The contribution of the thermocapillary effect to the heat transfer rate is quantified by the ratio of melting times between reference and thermocapillary simulations. For large Γ, heat transport can be greatly enhanced by a factor of up to 20, depending on Ma. For small Γ, this factor can be on the order of 5 when oscillatory flow is present. The analysis of the melting over a wide range of the governing parameters discovers the existence of an optimal curve Γ(Ma) that maximises the thermocapillary contribution.
The response of many biomedical systems can be modelled using a linear combination of damped exponential functions. The approximation parameters, based on equally spaced samples, can be obtained ...using Prony's method and its variants (e.g. the matrix pencil method). This paper provides a tutorial on the main polynomial Prony and matrix pencil methods and their implementation in MATLAB and analyses how they perform with synthetic and multifocal visual-evoked potential (mfVEP) signals. This paper briefly describes the theoretical basis of four polynomial Prony approximation methods: classic, least squares (LS), total least squares (TLS) and matrix pencil method (MPM). In each of these cases, implementation uses general MATLAB functions. The features of the various options are tested by approximating a set of synthetic mathematical functions and evaluating filtering performance in the Prony domain when applied to mfVEP signals to improve diagnosis of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).
The code implemented does not achieve 100%-correct signal approximation and, of the methods tested, LS and MPM perform best. When filtering mfVEP records in the Prony domain, the value of the area under the receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) curve is 0.7055 compared with 0.6538 obtained with the usual filtering method used for this type of signal (discrete Fourier transform low-pass filter with a cut-off frequency of 35 Hz).
This paper reviews Prony's method in relation to signal filtering and approximation, provides the MATLAB code needed to implement the classic, LS, TLS and MPM methods, and tests their performance in biomedical signal filtering and function approximation. It emphasizes the importance of improving the computational methods used to implement the various methods described above.

Microbial dynamics in an upgrading biogas reactor system undergoing a more than two years-period at stable operating conditions were explored. The carbon dioxide generated during biomass degradation in the first reactor of the system was converted to methane into the secondary reactor by addition of external hydrogen. Considering the overall efficiency, the long-term operation period resulted in an improved biogas upgrading performance (99% methane content). However, a remarkable accumulation of acetate was revealed, indicating the enhancement of homoacetogenic activity. For this reason, a shift in the anaerobic digestion microbiome was expected and evaluated by 16S rRNA amplicon analysis. Results demonstrated that the most abundant archaeal species identified in the first time point, Candidatus Methanoculleus thermohydrogenotrophicum, was replaced by Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus, becoming dominant after the community adaptation. The most interesting taxonomic units were clustered by relative abundance and six main long-term adaptation trends were found, characterizing functionally related microbes (e.g. homoacetogens).
Key debates of contemporary cultural sociology – the rise of the ‘cultural omnivore’, the fate of classical ‘highbrow’ culture, the popularization, commercialization and globalization of culture – ...deal with temporal changes. Yet, systematic research about these processes is scarce due to the lack of suitable longitudinal data. This book explores these questions through the lens of a crucial institution of cultural mediation – the culture sections in quality European newspapers – from 1960 to 2010. Starting from the framework of cultural stratification and employing systematic content analysis both quantitative and qualitative of more than 13,000 newspaper articles, Enter Culture, Exit Arts? presents a synthetic yet empirically rich and detailed account of cultural transformation in Europe over the last five decades. It shows how classifications and hierarchies of culture have changed in course of the process towards increased cultural heterogeneity. Furthermore, it conceptualizes the key trends of rising popular culture and declining highbrow arts as two simultaneous processes: the one of legitimization of popular culture and the other of popularization of traditional legitimate culture, both important for the loosening of the boundary between ‘highbrow’ and ‘popular’. Through careful comparative analysis and illustrative snapshots into the specific socio-historical contexts in which the newspapers and their representations of culture are embedded – in Finland, France, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the UK – the book reveals the key patterns and diversity of European variations in the transformation of cultural hierarchies since the 1960s. The book is a collective endeavour of a large-scale international research project active between 2013 and 2018.
A detailed numerical investigation of thermocapillary effects during the melting of phase-change materials in microgravity is presented. The phase-change transition is analysed for the ...high-Prandtl-number material n-octadecane, which is enclosed in a two-dimensional rectangular container subjected to isothermal conditions along the lateral walls. The progression of the solid/liquid front during the melting leaves a free surface, where the thermocapillary effect acts driving convection in the liquid phase. The nature of the flow found during the melting depends on the container aspect ratio, $\varGamma$, and on the Marangoni number, $Ma$. For large $\varGamma$, this flow initially adopts a steady return flow structure characterised by a single large vortex, which splits into a series of smaller vortices to create a steady multicellular structure (SMC) with increasing $Ma$. At larger values of $Ma$, this SMC undergoes a transition to oscillatory flow through the appearance of a hydrothermal travelling wave (HTW), characterised by the creation of travelling vortices near the cold boundary. For small $\varGamma$, the thermocapillary flow at small to moderate $Ma$ is characterised by an SMC that develops initially within a thin layer near the free surface. At larger times, the SMC evolves into a large-scale steady vortical structure. With increasing applied $Ma$, a complex oscillatory mode is observed. This state, referred to as an oscillatory standing wave (OSW), is characterised by the pulsation of the vortical structure. Finally, for an intermediate $\varGamma$ both HTW and OSW modes can be found depending on $Ma$.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disorder caused by loss or mutations in SMN1. According to age of onset, achieved motor abilities, and life span, SMA patients are classified into type I (never sit), II (never walk unaided) or III (achieve independent walking abilities). SMN2, the highly homologous copy of SMN1, is considered the most important phenotypic modifier of the disease. Determination of SMN2 copy number is essential to establish careful genotype–phenotype correlations, predict disease evolution, and to stratify patients for clinical trials. We have determined SMN2 copy numbers in 625 unrelated Spanish SMA patients with loss or mutation of both copies of SMN1 and a clear assignation of the SMA type by clinical criteria. Furthermore, we compiled data from relevant worldwide reports that link SMN2 copy number with SMA severity published from 1999 to date (2834 patients with different ethnic and geographic backgrounds). Altogether, we have assembled a database with a total of 3459 patients to delineate more universal prognostic rules regarding the influence of SMN2 copy number on SMA phenotype. This issue is crucial in the present scenario of therapeutic advances with the perspective of SMA neonatal screening and early diagnosis to initiate treatments.
The study aimed to develop evidence-based recommendations for the treatment of rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease (RPILD) associated with the anti-Melanoma Differentiation-Associated Gene ...5-positive dermatomyositis (DM) syndrome.
The task force comprised an expert panel of specialists in rheumatology, intensive care medicine, pulmonology, immunology, and internal medicine. The study was carried out in two phases: identifying key areas in the management of DM-RPILD syndrome and developing a set of recommendations based on a review of the available scientific evidence. Four specific questions focused on different treatment options were identified. Relevant publications in English, Spanish or French up to April 2018 were searched systematically for each topic using PubMed (MEDLINE), EMBASE, and Cochrane Library (Wiley Online). The experts used evidence obtained from these studies to develop recommendations.
A total of 134 studies met eligibility criteria and formed the evidentiary basis for the recommendations regarding immunosuppressive therapy and complementary treatments. Overall, there was general agreement on the initial use of combined immunosuppressive therapy. Combination of high-dose glucocorticoids and calcineurin antagonists with or without cyclophosphamide is the first choice. In the case of calcineurin antagonist contraindication or treatment failure, switching or adding other immunosuppressants may be individualized. Plasmapheresis, polymyxin B hemoperfusion and/or intravenous immunoglobulins may be used as rescue options. ECMO should be considered in life-threatening situations while waiting for a clinical response or as a bridge to lung transplant.
Thirteen recommendations regarding the treatment of the anti-MDA5 positive DM-RPILD were developed using research-based evidence and expert opinion.
