A novel approach for positron injection and acceleration in the laser driven plasma wakefield is proposed. One ring-shaped beam and one coaxially propagating Gaussian beam drive wakefields in a ...preformed plasma volume filled with both electrons and positrons. The laser’s ponderomotive force as well as the charge separation force in the front bucket of the first bubble are utilized to provide the transverse momenta of injected positrons and those positrons can be trapped by the focusing field and then accelerated by the wakefield. Theoretical analysis of the process is presented and verified by particle-in-cell simulations. The simulations show that relatively high-charge, quasimonoenergetic positron beams can be obtained.

The keratin-associated proteins (KAPs) are structural components of hair/wool fibres. All of the KAPs identified to date contain cysteine, which is thought to form disulphide bonds cross-linking the ...keratin intermediate filaments. Here, we report the identification of a KAP gene in sheep that would produce a protein that contains a high proportion (63.2 mol%) of glycine and tyrosine, but would not contain any cysteine. This suggests that other forms of intra- and inter-strand interaction may occur with this KAP, such as interactions via ring-stacking and hydrogen-bonding. Introduction
The purpose of this study was to determine whether trabecular bone score (TBS) has additive value for discriminating distal radius fracture (DRF) independent of BMD.
Methods
We compared BMD and TBS in 258 postmenopausal women with a DRF older than 50 years of age with age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls who had no history of osteoporotic fracture. BMD was measured at the lumbar spine and hip using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scans (GE Lunar Prodigy). TBS was calculated on the same spine image. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the odds ratio (OR) for the occurrence of DRF using age, BMI, lumbar spine BMD, total hip BMD, and TBS.
Results
Patients with a DRF had significantly lower BMDs at hip (neck, trochanter and total) than those of controls: 0.752 ± 0.097, 0.622 ± 0.089, and 0.801 ± 0.099 in patients and 0.779 ± 0.092, 0.648 ± 0.089, 0.826 ± 0.101 in controls. However, lumbar spine BMD and TBS were not significantly different between the groups (
p
= 0.400 and 0.864, respectively). The multivariate analysis indicated that only total hip BMD was significantly associated with the occurrence of DRF (OR, 10.231; 95 % confidence interval, 1.724–60.702;
p
= 0.010).
Conclusions
TBS was not different between women with a DRF and those without a history of osteoporotic fracture, suggesting that TBS measured at the lumbar spine does not reflect early microarchitectural changes of the distal radius. Only total hip BMD is associated with the risk of DRF in Korean women.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of late displacement after the treatment of distal radial fractures with a locking volar plate, and to investigate the clinical and radiological ...factors that might correlate with re-displacement. From March 2007 to October 2009, 120 of an original cohort of 132 female patients with unstable fractures of the distal radius were treated with a volar locking plate, and were studied over a follow-up period of six months. In the immediate post-operative and final follow-up radiographs, late displacement was evaluated as judged by ulnar variance, radial inclination, and dorsal angulation. We also analysed the correlation of a variety of clinical and radiological factors with re-displacement. Ulnar variance was significantly overcorrected (p < 0.001) while radial inclination and dorsal angulation were undercorrected when compared statistically (p < 0.001) with the unaffected side in the immediate post-operative stage. During follow-up, radial shortening and dorsal angulation progressed statistically, but none had a value beyond the acceptable range. Bone mineral density measured at the proximal femur and the position of the screws in the subchondral region, correlated with slight progressive radial shortening, which was not clinically relevant. Volar locking plating of distal radial fractures is a reliable form of treatment without substantial late displacement.

. The principal signature of both electron and proton PeVatrons is ultrahigh-energy (exceeding 100 TeV) γ radiation. Evidence of the presence of a proton PeVatron has been found in the Galactic Centre, according to the detection of a hard-spectrum radiation extending to 0.04 PeV (ref.
). Although γ-rays with energies slightly higher than 0.1 PeV have been reported from a few objects in the Galactic plane
, unbiased identification and in-depth exploration of PeVatrons requires detection of γ-rays with energies well above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the detection of more than 530 photons at energies above 100 teraelectronvolts and up to 1.4 PeV from 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources with a statistical significance greater than seven standard deviations. Despite having several potential counterparts in their proximity, including pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants and star-forming regions, the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy γ-rays have not yet been firmly localized and identified (except for the Crab Nebula), leaving open the origin of these extreme accelerators.
The keratin-associated proteins (KAPs) are important constituents of wool fibers. Of the many mammalian KAP genes (KRTAPs) identified, KRTAP20-1 has been described in humans, but it has not been ...described in any other species. A search of the sheep genome using the human KRTAP20-1 sequence revealed a homologous open reading frame on chromosome 1, which would encode a high glycine-tyrosine KAP. PCR-single-stranded conformational polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) analysis identified 8 different banding patterns representing 8 unique DNA sequences (named A to H). The sequences had highest similarity to the human KRTAP20-1 sequence, and this suggests that they are variants of ovine KRTAP20-1. Among these variants, a 12-bp insertion/deletion and 6 single nucleotide poly- morphisms (SNPs), including one 5' untranslated region (UTR) SNP, one 3' UTR SNP, and 2 nonsynonymous SNPs, were detected. Variant A was found to be associated with a decrease in mean fiber diameter, fiber diameter standard deviation, and prickle factor, whereas variant C was associated with increased greasy fleece weight and decreased wool yield. These associations persisted after adjusting for the effect of 2 nearby KRTAPs (KRTAP6-3 and KRTAP22-1) that have also been reported to associate with these wool traits. This suggests that variation in KRTAP20-1 affects wool yield and mean fiber diameter-associated traits, and that this effect is unlikely to be the result of the clustering of these KRTAPs on chromosome 1.
Summary
High glycine–tyrosine keratin‐associated proteins (HGT‐KAPs) are predominantly present in the orthocortex of wool fibres. They vary in abundance in different wools and have been implicated in ...regulating wool fibre properties, but little is known about the functional roles of these proteins in the fibre matrix. In this study, we used polymerase chain reaction – single‐strand conformational polymorphism (PCR‐SSCP) analysis to screen for variation in a gene encoding the ovine HGT‐KAP6‐1 protein. We identified three gene variants (A, B and C). Variants A and B were similar to each other, with only three nucleotide differences occurring downstream of the coding sequence. However, variant C had a 57‐bp deletion that would notionally result in a loss of 19 amino acids in the protein. The presence of C was found to be associated with an increase in mean fibre diameter (MFD), fibre diameter standard deviation (FDSD), coefficient of variation of fibre diameter (CVFD) and prickle factor (percentage of fibres over 30 microns; PF). Sheep of genotype BC produced wool of greater MFD, FDSD and PF than sheep of genotypes AA, AB and BB. The CVFD was greater in the BC sheep than the AB sheep. The results suggest that variation in ovine KRTAP6‐1 affects wool fibre diameter‐associated traits and that the 57‐bp deletion in this gene would lead to coarser wool with greater FDSD, CVFD and PF.
To report the long-term outcomes of Chinese rectal cancer patients after adopting a Watch and Wait (W&W) strategy following neoadjuvant therapy (NAT).
This multicenter, cross-sectional study was ...based on real-world data. The study cohort comprised rectal cancer patients who had achieved complete or near complete clinical responses (cCRs, near-cCRs) after NAT and were thereafter managed by a W&W approach, as well as a few patients who had achieved good responses after NAT and had then undergone local excision for confirmation of pathological complete response. All participants had been followed up for ≥2 years. Patients with distant metastases at baseline or who opted for observation while living with the tumor were excluded. Keratin-associated proteins (KAPs) are constituents of wool and hair fibres and are believed to play an important role in determining the characteristics of the fibres. In the current study, a ...polymerase chain reaction-single stranded conformational polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) approach was used to screen for variation in the ovine KAP15-1 gene (KRTAP15-1). Four PCR-SSCP banding patterns, representing four different variants (named A to D), were detected. Four single nucleotide polymorphisms were found within the coding region and three of these were non-synonymous. The effect of this genetic variation on wool traits was investigated in 396 Merino × Southdown-cross sheep. Of the three variants found in these sheep (A, B and C), the presence of B was found to be associated with decreased wool yield, while C was associated with increased wool yield and decreased fibre diameter standard deviation. Sheep of genotype AC had a higher wool yield than those of genotype AA or AB.
