We present a new limit on the production of a light dark-force mediator with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE. This boson, called U, has been searched for in the decay ϕ→ηU, U→e+e−, analyzing the decay ...η→π0π0π0 in a data sample of 1.7 fb−1. No structures are observed in the e+e− invariant mass distribution over the background. This search is combined with a previous result obtained from the decay η→π+π−π0, increasing the sensitivity. We set an upper limit at 90% C.L. on the ratio between the U boson coupling constant and the fine structure constant of α′/α<1.7×10−5 for 30<MU<400 MeV and α′/α⩽8×10−6 for the sub-region 50<MU<210 MeV. This result assumes the Vector Meson Dominance expectations for the ϕηγ⁎ transition form factor. The dependence of this limit on the transition form factor has also been studied.
Ultrafine particles or nanoparticles (UFPs or PM0.1) are the fraction of ambient particulates with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 0.1 microm. Currently UFPs are emerging as the most abundant ...particulate pollutants in urban and industrial areas, as their exposures have increased dramatically because of anthropogenic sources such as internal combustion engines, power plants, incinerators and many other sources of thermo-degradation. Ultrafine particles have been less studied than PM2.5 and PM10 particulates, mass concentrations of particles smaller than 2.5 and 10 microm, respectively. OBJECTIVE, EVIDENCE AND INFORMATION SOURCES: We examined the current scientific literature about the health effects of ultrafine particles exposure.
UFPs are able to inhibit phagocytosis, and to stimulate inflammatory responses, damaging epithelial cells and potentially gaining access to the interstitium. They could be responsible for consistent reductions in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) in patients with asthma. Chronic exposure to UFPs can produce deleterious effects on the lung, also causing oxidative stress and enhancing pro-inflammatory effects in airways of COPD patients. Cardiovascular detrimental consequences due to UFPs exposure have observed in epidemiological studies, and could likely be explained by translocation of UFPs from the respiratory epithelium towards circulation and subsequent toxicity to vascular endothelium; alteration of blood coagulation; triggering of autonomic nervous system reflexes eventually altering the cardiac frequency and function. Once deposited deeply into the lung, UFPs--in contrast to larger-sized particles--appear to access to the blood circulation by different transfer routes and mechanisms, resulting in distribution throughout the body, including the brain, with potential neurotoxic consequences.
UFPs represent an area of toxicology of emerging concern. A new concept of environmental medicine would help in understanding not only the environmental mechanisms of disease, but also in developing specific preventive or therapeutic strategies for minimizing the dangerous influence of pollution on health.

at the same time. This constitutes a very powerful tool for testing at the utmost precision the quantum coherence of the entangled kaon pair state, and to search for tiny decoherence and
CPT
violation effects, which may be justified in a quantum gravity framework.

the difference of the kaon decay times, the decoherence and
CPT
violation parameters of various phenomenological models are measured with a largely improved accuracy with respect to previous analyses.
The results are consistent with no deviation from quantum mechanics and
CPT
symmetry, while for some parameters the precision reaches the interesting level at which — in the most optimistic scenarios — quantum gravity effects might show up. They provide the most stringent limits up to date on the considered models.
The existence of a light dark force mediator has been tested with the KLOE detector at DAΦNE. This particle, called U, is searched for using the decay chain ϕ→ηU, η→π+π−π0, U→e+e−. No evidence is ...found in 1.5 fb−1 of data. The resulting exclusion plot covers the mass range 5<MU<470 MeV, setting an upper limit on the ratio between the U boson coupling constant and the fine structure constant, α′/α, of ⩽2×10−5 at 90% C.L. for 50<MU<420 MeV.
Tests of the T, CP and CPT symmetries in the neutral kaon system are performed by the direct comparison of the probabilities of a kaon transition process to its symmetry-conjugate. The exchange of in ...and out states required for a genuine test involving an antiunitary transformation implied by time-reversal is implemented exploiting the entanglement of K0K‾0 pairs produced at a ϕ-factory.
A data sample collected by the KLOE experiment at DAΦNE corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb−1 is analysed to study the Δt distributions of the ϕ→KSKL→π+π−π±e∓ν and ϕ→KSKL→π±e∓ν3π0 processes, with Δt the difference of the kaon decay times. A comparison of the measured Δt distributions in the asymptotic region Δt≫τS allows to test for the first time T and CPT symmetries in kaon transitions with a precision of few percent, and to observe CP violation with this novel method.
Neutral kaon pairs produced in ϕ decays in anti-symmetric entangled state can be exploited to search for violation of CPT symmetry and Lorentz invariance. We present an analysis of the CP-violating ...process ϕ→KSKL→π+π−π+π− based on 1.7 fb−1 of data collected by the KLOE experiment at the Frascati ϕ-factory DAΦNE. The data are used to perform a measurement of the CPT-violating parameters Δaμ for neutral kaons in the context of the Standard Model Extension framework. The parameters measured in the reference frame of the fixed stars are:Δa0=(−6.0±7.7stat±3.1syst)×10−18 GeV,ΔaX=(0.9±1.5stat±0.6syst)×10−18 GeV,ΔaY=(−2.0±1.5stat±0.5syst)×10−18 GeV,ΔaZ=(3.1±1.7stat±0.5syst)×10−18 GeV. These are presently the most precise measurements in the quark sector of the Standard Model Extension.
Based on a sample of 300 million KS mesons produced in ϕ→KLKS decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DAΦNE e+e− collider we have measured the branching fraction for the decay KS→πμν. The KS ...mesons are identified by the interaction of KL mesons in the detector. The KS→πμν decays are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and by a time-of-flight measurement. Signal efficiencies are evaluated with data control samples of KL→πμν decays. A fit to the reconstructed muon mass distribution finds 7223±180 signal events. Normalising to the KS→π+π− decay events the result for the branching fraction is B(KS→πμν)=(4.56±0.11stat±0.17syst)×10−4. It is the first measurement of this decay mode and the result allows an independent determination of |Vus| and a test of the lepton-flavour universality.

We present the novel implementation of a non-differentiable metric approximation and a corresponding loss-scheduling aimed at the search for new particles of unknown mass in high energy physics ...experiments. We call the loss-scheduling, based on the minimisation of a figure-of-merit related function typical of particle physics, a Punzi-loss function, and the neural network that utilises this loss function a Punzi-net. We show that the Punzi-net outperforms standard multivariate analysis techniques and generalises well to mass hypotheses for which it was not trained. This is achieved by training a single classifier that provides a coherent and optimal classification of all signal hypotheses over the whole search space. Our result constitutes a complementary approach to fully differentiable analyses in particle physics. We implemented this work using PyTorch and provide users full access to a public repository containing all the codes and a training example.
