The research literature on assisted reading is reviewed to determine whether this approach should be recommended to remedial reading and classroom teachers. To date, research has been inconclusive as ...to when, how, or why any of the forms of assisted reading can be used effectively. (SEW)
A multi-model ensemble-based system for seasonal-to-interannual prediction has been developed in a joint European project known as DEMETER (Development of a European Multimodel Ensemble Prediction ...System for Seasonal to Interannual Prediction). The DEMETER system comprises seven global atmosphere–ocean coupled models, each running from an ensemble of initial conditions. Comprehensive hindcast evaluation demonstrates the enhanced reliability and skill of the multimodel ensemble over a more conventional single-model ensemble approach. In addition, innovative examples of the application of seasonal ensemble forecasts in malaria and crop yield prediction are discussed. The strategy followed in DEMETER deals with important problems such as communication across disciplines, downscaling of climate simulations, and use of probabilistic forecast information in the applications sector, illustrating the economic value of seasonal-to-interannual prediction for society as a whole.

A study of the reliability of a procedure for making systematic observations in small, relatively isolated Air Force installations of conceptions of the role of: (1) the Commanding Officer; (2) the ...Generalized Officer (all officers except Commanding Officer); & (3) the NCOIC (Non-Commissioned-Officer-inCharge of work sections, etc.). The hypothesis is tested that the observed behavior of official leaders can be predicted from the responses to questionnaire items relevant to the ways leaders in their positions should act. The questionaire contained items dealing with 4 dimensions of conception: (1) interest in men; (2) manner of giving orders; (3) adherence to Air Force regulations; & (4) consistency in disciplinary matters. Field observers, recorded all official leader acts relevant to any of the 4 role dimensions. 3 judges independently decided if a given record was relevant to a particular dimension according to predetermined 'rules for content analysis of observation records.' The judges ranked the officers on each of the 4 role dimensions. The ranks for each dimension ranged from 'strong evidence of (dimension), with no contrary evidence' to 'strong evidence of lack of (dimension), with no contrary evidence.' The reliability of the procedure for classifying interview data according to a particular dimension was tested by determining the amount of agreement among the classifications made by the 3 judges. 75% agreement or better among the 3 judges was accepted as evidence of reasonable reliability. Reliability of the ranking procedure was tested by comparing the ranks based on the observations of 2 field observers, and reliability of the field observation and recording (together) by comparing the final judges' rankings based on the field observation of the two field observers. Interpretations and descriptions of the reliability tests are presented. The test of the hypothesis revealed a 'moderate association' between responses and observed behavior of some of the leaders.
